Vazhachal falls is the less famous cousin of Athirapally falls, but you should visit if you are going to Athirapally. Entry fee for both is included in the same ticket. This is more of a horizontal fall rather than vertical and has it's own beauty. For families with senior citizen, this is the one to enjoy. I was travelling with my 71 yr old mother with knee issues, she could make this one.

The vazhachal falls is the right place to enjoy the beauty of the nature, waterfalls in the forest, cascading in several steps and we can go near the falls but stay behind the fence. The water flows like milk and sprinkles on us when we go near the fence and it's not advisable to try to swim in the area since the water flow is strong and the roack beneath is slippery. Nice place to spend some time with family or friends.

A perfect place for a family get away.. a place wher you could spend time away from the crowds . From my experience I felt myself in the lap of nature. Seeing green all around literally made me float away fro the hectic every day life. It was really awesome and we really had a quality family time

The waterfalls is one of most beautiful falls I have ever been. The place is called Athirapally and it is about 60 kms away from Thrissur (which has a railway station) and also about 80 to 90 kms from Palakkad (railway station). The closes airport would be Cochin, Thiruvandrum or may be even chennai. If you are flying to either of these places train commutation to Thrissur or Palakkad is easily feasible.
There are about 3 waterfalls close by within a vicinity of 5 to 10 kms.
i) Charpa falls ii) Athirapally iii) Vazachal falls.
It is worth a 2 day stay and the best seasons to be is during the rainfall when there is lot of water.
To spice up your stay there are about 2 small theme parks.
For a comfy travel I would advise you to hire a cab from Thrissur or Palakkad. The overall travel might cost you about Rs.4000. For cheaper ways I believe there is public bus that keeps commuting.
(If you are an indian or have watched Hindi movies :) the place I am talking about is the one that is shown in the movie Raavan or Barso re song.) Wanted to mention this as the place might not have gained popularity in terms of tourism but it is definetely worth a visit.

Good visit. Is about 2 hours drive from Ernakulam. About 10 mins from main Athirapally falls. So one can visit Vazhachal 1st , spend some time here and then go back to Athirappaly. No way as comparable as Athirappally.

the falls is a series of rapids on the chalakkudy river. There is a small park like place where you can walk through and reach a place where you could get into the river for a refreshing bath. Kindly heed the advice of the staff and use the place they recommend. Although the water looks docile in summer still its dangerous. The day before we visited two youngsters lost their life just because they dint heed the advice of security staff.

This place is not as crowded as Athirapally. There are benches in the park to sit & relax. It's not far away from Athirapally falls.

Exciting endeavor, if you want to see rainforrest, mountains, wild waterfalls and the beauty of this pristine park and do not dread curvy road and croads of people. There are wild animals in the national park and roads close at 18:00, beacause elephants and other animals start to roam to trink. The local magazine sometimes writes, that some vehicle get stuck or blocked by elephants herds wanting to move towards the road.

How to reach vazhachal falls from athirapally falls. Is any public transport available? We dont have a own vehicle to commute.
Written November 15, 2018
There are lots of 4-wheel autorickshaws which are available at the entrance (ticket counter) of Athirapally falls. You will have to pay the standard fare (do negotiate). No need to have your own vehicle.

Which time of the day is ideal for a visit to the falls? Does going there around 5pm make sense?
Written April 8, 2018
As the previous comment has stated, early morning or around 5 pm should be good. Day times will be very hot.

Hello all, I would be reaching Athirapally falls by 3PM . Is the time sufficient for visiting both Athirapally and vazanchal falls?
I would be with my elderly parents so which waterfall is easy to approach.
Thanks
Akhil

Athirappilly falls would come first, so it must be visited first. For elderly persons, it could be a bit difficult to first climb through steps and rocky area to reach the origin of falls and then to go down through rough terrain to reach the base. Again one has to come back through the same route. However, at 71 I could do it with my one one leg having no knee cap due to fracture 28 years back and another leg having fracture near ankle 2 years back and also having undergone bypass surgery 14 years back. As I wrote in my review, several ladies with children in lap were also going down. I do not know the state of your parents but I would advise to go down the terrain at a low pace and must avoid any slip.. Certainly the beauty of falls can only be experienced by reaching the base. If you can do it with your parents in spite of some pain in legs (to be experienced for next 2-3 days as I had) that would be worth the trouble. The total time taken would be 1-2 hours depending on the pace of going up, down and up about 80 feet rough terrain. I also advise the tourists to wear shoes during this tracking..
Vazachal falls can just take 15-20 minutes only and even if one is late by 15-20 minutes, he can enter it.

From Kochi airport to Athorappilly taxis must be available? Is it advisable to retain taxi for 2-3 days at Athorappilly? Anything else to be seen there? Which is the best place to stay at Athirppilly?
Written July 25, 2015
Stay at Fort Kochi. Not near the falls. Use Uber for local travel as much cheaper than taxis.
