Remarkable that the ancient Hindu rituals and practices are preserved here. It stands testimony to the ability of Hinduism to survive the onslaught of conversions and changes that pass of time brings about. The rituals here give you a bird's eye view how a simple way of worship of nature evolved to the present form thanks to the very powerful presiding deity. Any one visiting the temple with devotion will stand to benefit immensely.

Kodungallur situated close to Trichur, between Cochin and Trichur , has a place in India's history by being the port of landing for many European traders who had come to Kerala for its Spices. An orthodox town known for its cultural, religious and commercial space, this town is singularly famous for the ancient, yet very popular, Sri Bhagavathy temple. The huge temple complex sprawling over 10 acres of land, cannot be missed when you travel to Trissur from South and cross this town. Because the highway encircles the vast temple ground, which is endowed with lustrous Banyan and Peepal tress.
Situated right at the heart of the town, this temple is dedicated to the Goddess Bhadrakali( believed to be a form of Goddess Durga) popularly known as Kodungallur Amma. This a powerful deity known for her benevolence as well as power to cure critical diseases. It is believed that the Deity was installed by Lord Parasurama( the creator of kerala) to protect the people from dreaded diseases. There are several other deities also worshipped here and the temple Pond is considered very scared.Lots of people visit this temple daily.
The majot festival is the Kodungallur Bharani, in the months of February-March (Malayalam month of Kumbha) on the star Bharani. This is festival of the land, with the whole town bearing a festival look. Pagentry and special songs known for their puns and double meanings, known as Bharani Pattu sung bung several groups.
It is a temple worth visiting for any believer.
The deity looks majestic with the Angi.

I lived here in my teens, got a chance to go there after a long time in 2010 for the temple festival, really enjoyed, the festival happens in 4 days every day there are rituals in the temple with elephants some fire works etc. Also there is an exhibition happening for 30 days or so in January.

The Thalappoli festival, the harvest festival similar to ‘Pongal’ of Tamil Nadu, is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Makaram and the four-day Thalappoli commences from the evening of Makara Sankranthi with religious rituals.

Whenever someone call me to a drive , my answer will always be "YES". And this zeal has lead me to visit to this famous temple called "Bhagavathi Temple" which is situated in southern part of Thrissur district of Kerala.

When I was working in Cochin, one of my friend [who was Critical care Intensivist in a Hospital in Cochin] asked me to accompany him to shift his room to Kodungallur. As it was Sunday, without thinking much I agreed for his request.

Journey to Kodungallur from Ernakulam is amazingly picturesque. After finishing our work, we straight away headed to Bhagavathy Amma Temple. The name of the goddess in this temple is Bhadrakali (popularly known as "Kodungallur Amma"). The idol is unique because, it has eight hands that carry weapons and symbols including the head of one of the demon.!!

This temple is believed to be built by Parashurama. Temple architecture is typically Kerala style.Apart from Devi idol, there are idols of many dieties like Lord Shiva, Ganapathy etc.

There is a sacred pond towards left of temple, where devotees bathe before entering the main shrine.
Overall it was one among the best religious tour in Kerala apart from Padmanabha Swamy temple in Trivandrum and Shankaracharya temple in Kalady.

*Time to visit: Morning and evening hours where main prayers carried out.

* Do visit during Bharani Festival which is carried out in this temple during the month of March and April.
