Out of the World Experience
Sambhar is only touched by Bollywood fraternity till now…
Experience is surreal. But if in case you are driving from Jaipur via Jobner roads are bit difficult to travel.
Place looks where sky and land are meeting together.
Picturesque experience. There train which they are charging around 2000k for as an experience at salt lake area requires some cleanliness and maintainence..

Sambhar Lake is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts! Visited recently and was blown away by the tranquility. The vast saltwater lake is a peaceful retreat with stunning views. The surreal landscape and vibrant birdlife make it a photographer's dream. I spotted flocks of flamingos adding a pop of color to the serene surroundings. The salty breeze and the sound of water are therapeutic. Though the facilities are basic, the natural beauty compensates. It's a perfect spot for a day trip, offering a unique experience away from the hustle. Highly recommend for anyone seeking a peaceful escape!

Wonderful weekend gateway for NCR residents. Not a very happening place but way far from city life. Bring your own food and water as its a typical village. Its an natural lake and water level depends on nature.

Caution for tourists who are looking for fun and a lot of tourist facilities- you will find almost none. Things are scattered and the town is not geared up to serve tourism. If you are alone and not familiar with what to see then you need to devote some time on maps and identifying locations of your interest. The locations that are in vicinity are-
1 Sambhar Salt Lake (it is spread in huge area so means no specific locality),
2 a place near railway station, known as Kochia ki dhani, where you can see flamingos,
3 salt works (hindustan Salt near sambhar town),
4 old guest house in sambahr town,
5 Naliasar excavation site (maintained by Archaeological Survey of India),
6 Naliasar fresh water lake (on way to excavation site),
7 Narayana-seat of dadu sampradaya,
8 devyani sarovar-a mini pushkar type shrine,
9. Sambhar town and pheni shops.
10. Shakambahri Temple
Identify what you want to see, locate on map and arrange in correct order of travel.
The Salt Lake is one of the 26 Ramsar sites of India. Its ornithological history dates back to 1873 when one of the Salt Inspector, R. M. Adam, carried out detailed survey of birds of this region for Sir A.O Hume, founder of Indian Congress and Theosophical Society. They work got published in first ornithological journal of India known as Stray Feathers.
You can find tea shop near Naliasar. But there is no fast food shop/dhabas/snacks shop at many of the places mentioned above so keep your provisions with you. Yo will hardly find any public toilet except in town (sambhar and Narayana) and Naliasar excavations.

When we were about to pitch our tent a person in a pink innova came and stopped us. He asked us to get permission. The amount he asked was 35000 INR. We were only 3 people and the price they asked was enormous. We were shocked. We left. This is outrageous amount they are asking. They run a heritage camping resort near by and I think they want that people only stay at their place. This is a very very cheap.
Actually they have purchased rights for touristy things in the lake area from SAMBHAR SALT LTD. This was previously maintained by the LTD company and now they sold it. I am not sure that how and what right anybody has there.
Sambhar is indias largest salt lake and it must be the property of India and Indians. If they have a certain contract and for some purposes they are paying to govt, The price they quoted can not be for real. Why a common man can not pitch a tent and enjoy the natural wonder.
IS SAMBHAR LAKE IS A PRIVATE PROPERTY? IT MUST BE NOT. Then who are these people and why this kind of enormous charges??????

Though Sambhar Lake is more known for salt making from its natural salt lake, but this ancient town had a rich past, with Devyani Sarovar, similar to Pushkar, the price less artifacts, discovered here in excavation on archaeological sites are preserved at Albert museum hall in Jaipur, the wild life in adjoining jungles, the bird sanctuary and diverse wetland of Naliasar, declared under Ramsar convention attracts migratory birds from Siberia. The statues from Gurjar Parihar dynasty, almost 1000 year old are there to sea at Albert Museum Jaipur. Sambhar Lake has been in much news in recent years as it has become a hot spot for Bollywood film makers, Delhi 5, Ramlila, PK and many more numerous films are being shot here and more are coming. Architecture of town, its heritage and culture, festivals are unparalleled. Devyani Sarovar is a temple place where so many ancient temple are situates on the shore of small sarovar since centuries.

I visited Sambhar lake for the first time on 30th Dec 2013. Based on my short visit, I have listed below the places that I found to be of interest.
a) The Salt Pans: For this, you need to enter the actual Sambhar town, and then head to the railway-station, where you park. Cross over the railway tracks to the other side and you'll find the
salt processing plant, and beyond it, the narrow tracks of mini salt-train and the salt pans farther beyond (15-20 minutes of walk from RS). It's a pleasant experience to walk on the white flat lake-bed and look at the crude salt being loaded into the mini-train's wagons, and the mini train itself meandering through the pans slowly. It's unique and beautiful.
b) Shakambhri Devi Temple: It's 23 km from a spot 5 km short of Sambhar, where, while approaching the town from Dudu, the road to the temple branches off to the left at a railway crossing, and is clearly marked. The road runs parallel to lake's periphery and crosses a couple of villages; the road is narrow but in decent condition. The temple itself lies at the foothill of a hillock, and is the last one in a row of three temples clustered together. A rocky trail takes off beside the first temple, and heads up to the top of the hillock(10 minutes of rocky climb, steep in the last lap). From here the view is amazing; the lake bed extending uninterrupted for miles in all the directions. A slight line of Aravalis marks the horizon in the distance all around. Close to temple you can get down on to this expanse and a drive, whether on 2 or 4 wheels is an experience in itself. No overnight stay option is available here, other than your car or the temple complex. Electricity and cell-phone signals do exist. This place is a must visit if you are in Sambhar. It's serene and peaceful.
Other notes:
1. Sambhar isn't touristy so expect nothing fancy. You'll have to ask around for information. At the same time, it's interesting and will appeal to travelers.
2. This lake is home to thousands of Flamingos in winter season, but probably they are to be found much farther off. The lake was quite dry as far as the eye could see.
3. Sambhar has a local delicacy called "Pheeni", a sweet which can be found in many local eateries/T-shops. You might want to take a bite.
4. Most of the factual information about Sambhar, it's accessibility etc. is available on Net/Wiki.

In the range of 100 kms from jaipur its a wonderful location for photography. You may not find any food so carry it along with lots of water. Your own vehicle is a must but roads are not that great. We played cricket and that was good experience. Little wildlife and over all good location.

During my visit to Jaipur; I decided to explore the Sambhar Salt Lake. Its a fantastic 6-hours excursion some 70 Kms from Jaipur; however the internal proximity of Lake in and around is 30 Kms hence your return eventually turns out to be 100 Kms while coming back.
The best part is drive; NH-8 is at its best post Jaipur. Post some straight 50-Kms from Jaipur on NH-8 you reach at Mokhampura (from where you need to take right turn; Sambhar is further 30 Kms on this route.
You can visit at plant of Sambhar Salts Limited which is now known as Hindustan Salts Limited. The shooting of movie called "Highway" took place in the same compound.
Further one can also visit Mata Shakambhari Tample which has its own history from the era of King Prithvi Raj Chauhan.
Further the return route can be taken via Dudu so that one gets to see Naliasar Lake on the way.

Few questions on Sambhar lake:
1. Road via Dudu or Mokhampura which one is in good condition and recommended.
2. I have XUV 500 but it's not 4X4, can I take it to lake bed ?
3. Where exactly is salt railway track and old engine as shown in the pics ?
4. Is going to eastern part recommended or can be skipped ?

Everybody will point you towards kanchan restaurant on sambhar phulera road/ or restaurants in phulera, but i will recommend having food at krishna guest house just few meters away from kanchan restaurant. Its a kind of homestay and they prepare very good homely food. But i am not sure whether they serve tourists or to only those who are staying in their property.
