Sage Agastya wanted to take two hills?Sivagiri and Sakthigiri?to his abode in the South and commissioned his disciple Idumban to carry them. Idumban bore the hills slung across his shoulders, in the form of a kavadi one on either side. When he was fatigued, he placed the kavadi near Palani to take rest.
At this stage, Subrahmanya or Muruga had been outwitted in a contest for going round the world. Ganapati had won the prized fruit (pomegranate or mango) by simply going round His parents. Long after, this, Subrahmanya came sweating on His peacock to find that the prize had already been given away. In anger, the frustrated child left the divine parents and came down to Tiru Avinankudi at the Adivaram (pronounced Adivam. It means foot of the Sivagiri Hill). Siva pacified Him by saying that He (Subrahmanya) Himself was the fruit (pazham) of all wisdom and knowledge; nee ?you. Hence the place was called 'Pazham Nee' or Palani. Later, He withdrew to the hill and settled there as a recluse in peace and solitude.
When Idumban resumed his journey, he could not lift the hill. Muruga had made it impossible for Idumban to make it. In the fierce battle that ensued, Idumban was killed but was later on restored to life. Idumban prayed that:
whosoever carried on his shoulders the Kavadi, signifying the two hills and visited the temple on a vow, should be blessed and he should be given the privilege of standing sentinel at the entrance to the hill.
Hence we have the Idumban shrine halfway up the hill where every pilgrim is expected to offer obeisance to Idumban before entering the temple of Dandhapani. Since then, pilgrims to Palani bring their offerings on their shoulders in a kavadi. The custom has spread from Palani to all Muruga shrines worldwide.

The mountain which is just opposite to palani temple that gave us a nice look with plenty of shining and twisting lights all through the waving steps corridor during the night. After visiting palani temple in the night we visited the idumban temple in the next day morning. We were at the bottom of the idumban hill by 7.00 am. The shop keeper told the temple will open by 7.30 am. Though my spouse had knee pain and was hesitating. But seeing the gradual ascending of steps she got boosted and with my moral support she decided to climb the steps. After getting up nearly 150 steps ( they have written the count of steps after each 50 steps. Also the Msl details also written legibly) after stepping around 250 steps the steps started to ascend at 45 degree angle. Little tough for my wife and for me too as we both are at 56 and 50 respectively. They set up a shade at regular gap. Finally we ascended the top idumban temple. It was locked. We waited for purohit.we sat and rested for few minutes. It was a very good sight over there. We could see the palani temple from there. All around we had a good sight of whole palani town.we could see saravana poigai too
Lot more greenery. Rope cars were moving up and down with colorful cars linked to the iron rope. Forest flowers were smiling at us
Due to the early morning none were there
We could sit silently amidst the chirping sound of two tailed sparrow. Brown coloured chittu kuruvi also was flying here and there. Sun was raising at the back of idumban temple. Quite a good ambience.
Around 8 pm purihit came and started to clean the temple and with 15 minutes he called us for dharshan. Very big idumban statue.carrying both mountains at his shoulders with big mustache and masculine arms. Great warrior look. Had a nice dharshan and went around his sannidhi. Then we slowly came down and reached the bottom without much tiredness

We went there in the morning between 6 and 7 am. The temple was locked and you get a eerie feeling like you are gonna get robbed any moment. we noticed a couple of suspicious looking people there. So do visit but go in a group of when you can visibly see other people on the temple stairs.
The view from the top is great during sunrise/set and is otherwise a good break from the bustle of the hill next to it.

Visit to Idumban temple was unexpected but later this place was in the top priority while visiting Palani . It will take good 20-30 minutes to manure top of the steps but trust me its worthy . Idol is six feet high and it has several stories which was explained by the poojari .

The temple is generally not frequented by tourists. If you don't have time you can skip the visit to this temple. There are about 500 steps to the top & the place gives good view of the Palani Hills & the city.

This temple is almost mid way when we climb the steps to the Lord Muruga temple. One has to visit this before proceeding to the main temple.

One may visit this after visiting Palani Temple. Not many interesting things around. God Idumbar on the top of the Hill (Only one statue). No shops on the top of the hill. Around 500 Steps to the top.Not a must visit if you are on a short trip.
Old peoples please avoid as there is nothing interesting on the top. No shops, No Water taps, No Footwear stand, No Proper shelter (if visiting on a hot day). Small petty shops are there at the bottom of the hill.
One can see the Palani Temple Hill from here.
I rate it as average, as there is nothing interesting. Even the temple surrounding is not fully built.
