The strip to Sajnekhali sanctuary was marvellous. I went with my mother, wife and 2 sons in steamer. We saw a number of kingfishers, mongoose, wild boars, parrots in the place. The forest looks awesome. The river waters and sunset are marvellous.

Does the Title say it ALL ?? I am sure it made a lot of sense ... Yes !! Am talking about World's largest Mangrove forest "SUNDERBAN" . For All my readers outside West Bengal and across the globe .. if you have been to India and missed this place . YOU CANT AFFORD TO DO SO . Do take your time off to read the entire article and you would have your answer .

The Place is at the southern fringe of West Bengal . The Word "Mangrove Forest" is itself unique . You wont get to see such forest . Mangrove trees are those trees whose Roots come out to air unlike others . The Entire forest is composed of those tree . Now the question is "Why and How will you go there "

Does Jungle attracts you ?
Would you want to spend 2-3 days out of the city crowd & in the Lap of nature ?
Would you be able to sustain if you do not get internet connection & Mobile tower as well for these days
Do you want to see real wildlife and virgin forest ?
If the answers of the above questions are yes , then you must visit this place
Please note that you cannot go of your own to this place .You will have to plan your travel with some travel agencies . There are many travel operator in and around KOLKATA who make arrangement for Sunderban tours . The General tour itineraries are as follows
Day 1 - Take a Bus/cab from KOL to Canning (Road ends here) . From Canning take Motor boat /steamer to start your journey to Sunderban . This boat will be your only vehicle for your entire Sunderban trip . You will be staying in a Hotel in an island named "Pakhiralaya"
Day 2 :- Start your travel in the boat inside the dense mangrove forest and enjoy the beauty of nature
Day 3: - The Boat will drop you back to canning for your return journey

Now lets come back to my experience . I booked my travel from a tour operator named " Sunderban Nature Club" . They have a small set up however their arrangements were truly amazing . You need only 3 days to complete the tour . It only cost INR 4.5K/person ( $ 67 only) .. it would include everything (Excluding any shopping that you would want to do )

We (me , my wife, daughter & my parents) started our Journey from KOLKATA by Bus (Prebooked) and by afternoon we were at Canning . Then the journey started in the motorboat . The 1st day we could not see much since it was evening already .
We stayed in hotel ( Hotels are very basic in nature , do not expect any kind of Luxury ) . The Food were cooked in the boat only served at hotel/ Boat depending on the time of the day . They served fresh Fish with Rice and dal and it was simply delicious . The next day we started our journey in the boat inside the dense mangrove forest . Nature is really bountiful . You can see only green and green everywhere accompanied by rivers and channels . Be watchful you would see wild deer , wild Boars, Crocodile taking Sun Bath etc .
Can you see Royal Bengal Tiger ... Chances are 0.00001% .... Tigers do not love human being . They have their own personality stay in their own kingdom inside the forest . But the beauty of nature will really amuse you . You would definitely see Tigers' footprint which will prove His existence .

You are alone there . There will be No one to disturb you . IF you are a nature lover , it is your ideal place . Once you come back from Sunderban you will cherish the memory for a long time

Few things to note : -
1) The tours are generally very basic in nature . No point in getting through any expensive operator . They cannot make much difference
2) IF you are an aged person or you have senior citizen accompanying you .. do not forget to keep essential medicines with you .

So how do you feel . want to visit !!! AM sure you will . Do share your experience as well.
If you need any assistance feel free to write to me - Kaustav.samadder@gmail.com ( Please note , I am just a traveler , I am not attached to any tour operator and have no business relation, I can only assist you with my experience or connect you to the relevant person if required)

The premises include a watch tower for wild life viewing and a water body which has crocodiles in it . The Mangrove Interpretation Centre is very informative in terms of the Eco system in the Sunderbans

Sajnekhali is the place where forest deptt issues permit to enter the forest. For the reason, it is the first stop into Sundarban. There is a Mangrove Interpretation Centre which gives an idea of what mangrove forest is. There are two watch towers in total. Both offers great view of the forest.

Sajnekhali Bird Sanctuary is located in an island. The place is approachable only by boats. This place houses the forest department and permission office for safaris. The water of the delta are salty in taste and so animals find fresh water difficult to access except during rains.

The forest department have painstakingly created a waterhole for animals and have also created a watch tower. For a change, the visiting humans watch from within a fence. The tourists visiting the watch tower are probably not aware of the activity around the waterhole. We were lucky to have the Range Forest Officer come and explain the effort that has gone to create and maintain the waterhole.

Its a must see place.

To be able to see good wildlife, you need some good fortune; there is not much to do otherwise. The museum inside was not bad.

The forest department has set up a watch tower and excellent interactive centre. A must visit. There was local produce for sale but no one encouraged us to buy! Wish they had. I for one would have liked to help the local economy. Only small groups of maybe 10-15 should be allowed at a time..the atmosphere gets totally ruined with hordes of noisy tourists and ensures all wildlife flees for cover!
