I had the pleasure of having a day trip on a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala just a week ago. I was introduced to this incredibly modest and down to earth owner of the boat - Mr. Ajay who arranged his boat for myself and family. The boat was a 1 bedroom A/C, 72 feet, genuine houseboat (not fibre), with medium level luxury amenities. His crew were also very friendly and nice people whoconducted the tour professionally and even cooked a very good kerala meal for all of us, with Karimeen fry, Duck curry etc. We even stopped off at a couple of toddy shops to get some toddy, kappa and fish.
The cruise itself was excellent, with the cool winds of the vast and impressive Vembanad lake relaxing our bodies and minds. We set sail from the harbour in Pallathuruthy (around 8 kms before Alappuzha, on the Changanacherry to Alappuzha highway) at around 10:30 am and returned back at 17:30 hours. All cruise boats must stop sailing at 17:30 due to the local restrictions in place to aid the fishermen to lay their nets.
All in all, a wonderful trip, and is highly recommended!

Punnamada lake is beautiful.
A boat ride on its calm waters is almost spiritual.
My advice is to take a canoe or a medium size houseboat for 2-3 hours to explore this lake and the beautiful backwaters around it and to get a peek at the quaint village life that revolves around it.
This body of water can be glimpsed while in many locales while travelling by car, but is best experienced on a boat.

We stayed on a houseboat for one night in late December which was a very pleasant experience after a couple of weeks touring India
Whilst getting onto our boat was a rather noisy affare as all the boats have to load at the same time it was not particularly difficult.
10 minutes after you set off you are on a peaceful quiet lake and can start to relax and just let it all drift by.
The boats can accomodate from 2 to 20 paeople so you should be able to find something you need. Service is good and the crew will have their own chef (let them know if you have any particular food requirements)
Accomodation is good / basic and normally comfortable. (we even got to watch a live Premier League match)
whilst there are a lot of boats there is also a lot of canals and water so you will not be disturbed. They usually dock for the night (or you can take a day trip) and return the following morning by which time you will be relaxed and ready for your next adventure.

Sorry, not sure what the fuss is about. Too many houseboats put putting through frogging water traffic, as if road traffic wasn’t enough. But it’s a gimmick you know…..put a stupid tourist on a barge, shove him a couple of miles down river and let him marinade there overnight. Food ain’t great, barge ain’t great. Sorry, just a tourist trap for me.

You cant have a backwater holiday without a houseboat ride. We choose a day trip from 11 to 5 pm. Overnight houseboat stays during season will burn pockets

This is just the place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Kerala. You can just sit back on your ricebarge, relax and let the stress and strain just drift away. Yhe only sounds you will hear are the gentle lapping of the water against your ricebarge and the calls of the many different species of birds. This area has to be a bird-watcher's paradise.

June consider as the off season for houseboat, this is the perfect time experience houseboat especially for Indian tourists and budget Travelers.
Different kind of travel packages available,in which cheapest is provided by KTDC boat service for sight seeing.Houseboat rent is pretty much depends on the size or capacity and amenities provided by the the boat owners.
For couples and bachelor groups , sight seeing with night stay is advisable. This trip starts at morning 11 from punnamada starting point, which is located near ksrtc stand. This trip include Welcome drink ,lunch with karimeen(pearl spot) fry , evening tea and snacks, dinner and next morning breakfast.
If you get better price from one boat service provider which means they are managing that in your menu.
Mostly houseboat s have pitstops along the way in toddy shop and few shops which located on the shores, whatever you purchase from those shops houseboat chef will cook it for you,but price will be bit steep.
During this time of the year a 3 bedroom boat will cost around 13k for the afro mentioned trip.
Other sightseeing options will cost. Around 600per person.
After 5 o clock all the houseboat anchor BCOS of government orders.Litterly you are sleeping in banks of river floating on the lake.
Apparently houseboat number increased over the years,@peek season during snake boat race time, punnamada is crowded than the traffic in India.

Kuttanadu is a region covering the Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta and Kottayam Districts, well known for its vast paddy fields and geographical peculiarities. The region has the lowest altitude in India, and is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried around 4 to 10 feet (1.2 to 3.0 m) below sea level. Kuttanadu is historically important in the ancient history of South India and is the major rice producer in the state.
