Our stay in Sonmarg was for one day only. And after thajiwas, we headed to go over there at those lakes. As I wrote earlier in my review of thajiwas that I was badly injured and my dress became dirty, so I was quite upset on the way. But the roads of sonmarg were so mesmerizing that my mood instantly became enthusiastic again! It took almost 15 mins. by a car to reach over these from thajiwas. Unlike thajiwas, the twin lakes' (Gangabal & Nandakol) banks were not at all crowded. And that was a big relief. There were few empty benches to seat and take rest. Also, a small restaurant was running at a corner. The location was heavenly beautiful, calm, cool, placid.. just as I had seen earlier in many films (eg: bollywood movie 'Highway' etc.) There were boating facilities available at Gangabal lake, and angling facilities were available at Nandakol lake (I could see some red, yellow, white flags were flapping at marked fishing points). But no angler was visibly spotted, might be because of permit issues, not sure though. I sat down to rest on a bench for few minutes and took some lovely snaps. Few kashmiri pashmina-walas were moving around at that place with their stocks. I didn't take because I already bought an authentic one in Srinagar. As evening prevailed, I started hearing some shrill kind of chirps. From the local ones, I came to know that was actually marmots' chirps.. but I could not spot out any marmot within vicinity. After some time as it started drizzling, I had to leave.

This place is not accessible through roads. You will have roads till Naranag and from there it is a 5-6 hour trek on foot. You can get horses from the Gujjars but they will charge you a hefty amount for it. The view up there is awesome and worth all the trouble you take to reach there. Its a long trek so expect a minimum 3 days for this trip. Don't forget sunscreen. And there is no market upstairs so you have to take all arrangements with you only.

The journey to Sonamarg itself was a pure joy watching beautiful snow mountains and valleys. The water completes the sheer beauty of the place and the view was breathtaking. A must visit in Kashmir.

Camped for two nights as part of J&K Great Lakes Trek. A wonderful site for camping amid snow clad mountains. Blue water of the lakes are an invitation to swimming - though little chilled. Ample opportunity for photography. Plenty of Marmots around to see and hear.

We rented our tent and sleeping bags from de Tourist Reception Center in Srinagar. Then we took a taxi to Naranang for 2100 rupees, over there we searched for a suggested guest house we read about in the lonely planet (Khan guesthouse) . The owner of the guesthouse, Imtiyaz tel: 9469913579 or
9797193787, organized our trek. The plan was two nights three days to Gangabal lake including guide, food and two horses for 6,500 rupees (supposedly a really cheap price cause we where students). Sadly Imtiyaz mother had passed away a few days back so he couldn’t take us to the trek and send us with his 16 year old nephew Rafiq (who didn’t speak english). In terms of food they gave us enough but no meat only rice, eggs, potatoes, tomatoes, cookies and such. Also they didn’t gave us water hoping we drank the water form the mountains which in my opinion isn’t very clean. They way up is pretty straight forward there is a road almost all the way to the lake and there are small cottages where you can buy cookies and tea(20 rupees) on the way (i would say that even the guide isn’t necessary). We walked around 6 hours to get to our campsite (very close to the military campsite). It took us that long cause the way up is very steep. The good thing was that the horse carried our bags and when we got to camp they made our tent and helped us cook. The next morning we had breakfast and walked around two hours to see the twin lakes. Interesting fact there is a fishing permit you can get in Srinagar but Imtiaz and the guide gave us a fishing cane and told us it was ok. we started fishing and a guard came and took the cane cause we had no permit and asked for a compensation but its a Ripoff don’t give anything our guide asked us to help him get the cane back and that meant compensation but we didn’t and after a while he gave it back for free. Then we walked another two hours to camp. When we got there we realized it was a loss of hour time to stay another night so we decided to pack our things and go back against our guide who was worried because the payment. The way down is short only 2 or 3 hours. So what our experience thought us:
1. You can do it in one night and two days
2. People in Naranang overcharge the tourists
3. From Naranang Imtiaz took us to srinagar for 1500 rupees
4. Take bottles of water with you
