Great view from Southern facade
Dec 2019
I had the best view of the monastery from the Southern facade, where the top of the monastery was visible lining against the blue sky.

Himalayan Ajanta
Aug 2019
Tabo monastery has a very old history. In fact, the mud plastered old monastery is a gem with lots of exquisite paintings. Often it is referred to as ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’. It was heartening to see that the paintings were in good health.
One must visit this place during sunny morning for better visibility due to diffusing natural light from the top.

An ancient place
Jul 2018 • Family
The very old monastery at the heart of Tabo is mesmerizing. The lama there will tell you all about the different Mandalas depicted through statues. The center Mandala is Vairochana. At the back of the temple sits Buddha Amitava. A must visit.

The oldest functioning Buddhist monument in India
Apr 2018 • Friends
This is the oldest Buddhist monastery established in 996AD and situated at an altitude of 3280m. The monastery belongs to the gelugpa sect and is considered the most sacred one by His holiness Dalai Lama. The monastery celebrated its millennial celebration. It’s best to visit the monastery in the early morning to be able to listen to the lamas praying and to meditate. Also the sunlight entering the monastery is the only time you’ll be able to see the beautiful murals and paintings on the wall. There is new Gompa constructed just beside the old one, mainly for promoting education.

Oldest Gompa!!
Sep 2017 • Friends
The mud structure itself will give away about the how old the gompa is. Do keep this in your itinerary and stay at Tabo. If possible explore the caves as well. The paintings have turned old but the monastery has been very well preserved.

What an amazing place...
Nov 2017 • Couples
The oldest monastery in the Himalayas. It has a completely different look. Squat and square with mud walls, the complex looks like an ancient Egyptian temple. Everything about it is different from other Gompas in the area. Great paintings and halls. A must do.

What a beauty

This monastery belongs to 996 AD and it has a real treasure in it. Beautifully painted Buddhist wall paintings, big mud images of Bodhisattvas and that serene atmosphere..altogether it's beyond the explanation in words..only self experience can define it..taste it..👌👍

absolute visit to this century old monastery
Nov 2016 • Friends
Tabo makes for another night halt on the Lahaul & Spiti journey if one has entered via Kainnaur covering Nako. Tabo is situated beautifully in the Lahaul valley with river running next to it, an Helipad at river bank and a century old monastery. What else one could ask for when all these combined with zillions of stars above you and crazy stories to share with friends. a nice calm place with its humble people great to learn some of their traditions and hearing some tales from them a delight. visited in September 2016 here.
