About King Crab Safari by Snowhotel Kirkenes
he red King Crab is not only the biggest, but also the most delicious shellfish you will ever have the chance of tasting. On this exclusive king crab fishing excursion in Kirkenes, we will take you out on the fjord to find the great beast and you will see how we catch, prepare and cook it. Depending on the season, we'll drive either by snowmobile and sled out on the fjord ice or by RIB boat on the Varangerfjord where you can help pull up the crab pods. The journey will culminate in a warm farmhouse restaurant by the fjord where we'll serve the crab the northern Norwegian way – fresh, steamed and irresistible! All our tours include warm outfits, mittens, balaklava and shoes.

Sami Experience

Kirkenes had more than 300 bombing raids from Soviet airplanes, and more than 1000 times during the war years, the Air Raid alarms were sounded.
Andersgrotta was the refuge of the population throughout the war.
Andersgrotta is constructed beneath the bedrock in the centre of Kirkenes, a brilliantly well hidden location. On this guided sightseeing tour in Andersgrotta you will see a film about Kirkenes in war, based on archive and new recordings. The film is both in English, German and Norwegian.

This trip was really exciting, we learned and saw a lot. Were lucky with the weather too. But the main factor for the success of the trip was our guide Michael who seemed to be born for such a job :-) . He took really good care of us, was very talkative and gave us great insight into life in Finnmark. Thanks a lot! Needless to mention that freshly caught king crab is one of the best things you'll ever eat in your life. P.s. we did the tour during Covid-19 measures in summer 2020 and never felt insecure. All measures were taken properly.

We really enjoyed the tour on Snowscooter to the frozen lake, where we were catching the king crabs. Michael was a great guide, telling us the story of the crabs, and about the Area around kirkenes. Afterwords he cooked the crabs, which we were enjoying at the restaurant at the snow hotel. They tasted wonderful and that was plenty of food

We had a very memorable experience with Dirk, a very knowledgeable and entertaining guide. Transport out to the frozen lake on snowscooter, where we picked the crabs and then then he cooked them for us before we could eat them in the restaurant. The ultimate king crab experience !

We really enjoyed our kong crab tour with Micheal. He was very friendly and dedicated, and explained all details with great enthusiasm. He even recommended several other highlights for us to see during our remaining days in Kirkenes. The tour itself was shorter than expected, however the amount of crabs to eat was far beyond what we managed. All in all, a great day.

A brilliant experience and we would love to come back for the winter crab experience. Dirk is a competent and interesting guide who took us into Langfjord to Langfjordeid on a RIB before heading back in the direction of Kirkenes to pull up the crab baskets. As well as finding our dinner (Crikey those crabs are big!) we also saw a seal, jellyfish and lots of sea birds. Local history and the story of the crabs was really interesting also. If you haven’t eaten king crab fresh out of the sea this is a must. All the staff we came across at The Snow Hotel area were so professional, friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. Special thanks to Eric 😊
