About
A visit to Cerro da Vila Museum and Archaeological Site is a 5000-year journey through the history of humankind. The route through the ruins provides an immersive experience of a typical Roman maritime villa (c. 1st – 5th AD). Inside the villa are mosaics, luxurious fountains (domus), public and private baths, fish sauces factories, funerary monuments (columbaria, inhumation graves) and highlights the existence of a fluvial port serving as a trading post. In the museum, the temporal incursion begins with an on-site appreciation of the graves unearthed in Vinha do Casão cemetery, Vilamoura, Algarve (c. 12th – 10th BC), in a period that the south of the Iberian Peninsula focused their economy on the exploration and production of bronze metal. In this time travel, demand goes through the Roman (c. 1st – 5th AD), and Islamic (c. 8th – 12th AD) period. Archaeological artifacts related to architecture, sculpture, commerce and death are shown, with many of them being unique in Portugal.

Very interesting Roman site and museum
If in Villamora this museum is well worth a visit. It costs just €2 to enter. The ruins give a good idea of life in Roman times. Each room has informative clear signage. The museum is small contains many interesting artefacts.

    Very interesting museum and artefacts
At last somewhere decent to visit in a very commercialised Vilamoura which was extremely interesting with the remains/ruins of a villa. Also a lovely mueum on the site. Very reasonable admission fee especially for senior citizens. Stayed for an hour or more.

    Interesting
We had read out the Roman ruins before arriving and as it was a dull morning decided to walk around to the museum. We were not disappointed. We were warmly welcomed by the receptionist, who took the time to walk to the entrance with us explaining the route around the site and giving us a leaflet to explain further. There were more ruins than we expected and they were well displayed with clear signage explaining things. We then walked around the small museum which had many examples of items found. At €2 entrance each as seniors it was great value for money.

    Nice museum
A small museum just a short walk from vilamoura marina. Very good value on admission, approx 2euros per adult - we went about an hour before it closed and the lady said we could come again the next day for free if we wanted longer to look around. Nicely preserved Roman site to wander around and small museum of artefacts. Lovely little museum

    Beautiful ruins and informative museum
Informative museum with Roman ruins. The museum offers a pamphlet with a suggested route that takes you through the area that would have been the baths, the entrance, the necropolis and other highlights of a Roman villa. All is outside in a beautiful green area, clearly marked. Inside, archaeological artifacts from the Bronze Age, the Roman era and the Islamic era, all with informative experts about origin, historical era and uses. It costs 4€ for entry. Be aware that the museum is open only on weekdays (Monday- Friday) and that it opens at 09:30 (Google currently says 09:00)

This small museum within walking distance of Vilamoura Marina is a world away from the noisy tourist trail. It contains the ruined outlines of several antique houses and some floor mosaics outdoors, and a small exhibit indoors. The entrance fee was only €2.00 per retired visitor and at that price one must say it was value for money.

Very exciting visit to the Cerro da Vila museum and archaeological site. Here you go on an exciting journey back to the heyday of the Roman Empire. The route through the ruins provides an immersive experience of a typical Roman maritime villa (approx. 1st – 5th AD). Inside the villa are mosaics, luxurious fountains ( domus ), public and private baths, fish sauce factories, funerary monuments ( columbaria , inhumation graves), as well as a river port that served as a trading post. The information boards are fantastically short and easy for everyone to understand in both English and Portuguese.
My little boy of 3 was very fascinated by the ruins, and especially the skeletons.

If you’re expecting to go and see an excavated Roman villa and a small museum you won’t be disappointed. A map and signs take you round the ruins; not just the villa(with its mosaic floors) but a public baths, wells, fish factory, other housing and a mausoleum. Much bigger than I expected. Inside the modern, air conditioned, museum building are various finds from pre-Roman times through to the Islamic period. Great way to spend an hour or so and it only cost €4 to get in.

We discovered this little gem when visiting Portugal in what can be deemed as the quieter months and not much is open.

It is just up from the Marina and only costs 3 euros. Although our youngest (6 years old) got in free and our eldest got a discounted rate as a student. It is open from approx 10am until 12.30pm and then 2pm until 6pm. However, this may be longer during the summer season.

The ruins are an amazing insight into Roman history and the mosaic flooring is amazing. All of my children had a great time and my youngest said it was one of the best trips he has had.

We stayed for about an hour and there is a small museum in the main building.

We stayed in Albufeira so was a short taxi ride away approx 12 euros each way for 6 people.

3 euros to wander around an extensive Roman site, including superb villa entrance mosaic and both private and public bathing rooms. Explained in bi-lingual signs across the site, together with a small museum of some of the found items from the excavations.

Allow around 30-60 minutes to walk around these ruins. There are 17 or so dual-language information boards dotted around the site. Just 3-4 minutes uphill walk from the marina, this hidden gem provides the well preserved foundations of a 2,000 yr old site. The inner museum is currently closed for covid reasons, so the prices has been dropped to around €2 for adults. Our 5 yr old got in for free.

This is a great historical site and well worth the visit. The staff was very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The site is pretty small compared with some others but that just makes it easier to see everything. In addition to the ruins there is a very interesting museum with more well preserved relics.

The actual museum is quite small and low-key but the outside views of the villa ruins are well worth the visit and only a few euros entry. (Just find a way up a few steps from the marina.) As far as I can see, it's the only sight worth seeing n Vilamoura.
