It has been two years that we couldn't attent the concert of Bach "Matthäus-Passion" because of the pandemic. The "Grote Kerk" is very famous because of that concert. We did walk in the town and stopped for a moment to see the building ( only from outside ).

Attended the Ciconia Consort English Christmas Concert in this magnificent church. Not only was the concert fantastic but the church was a magnificent background to the music.

We live in the neighborhood for many years and always wanted to climb the tower of the Grote Kerk. We finally did it last week with the kids and other 10 persons, nice groep of mixed nationalities. The guide was very knowledgeable about the tower but also about the past of Naarden. He shared the info both in English and Dutch. Visit took about 1hr, we counted the steps and enjoyed the extensive view. It was a clear sunny day and we could see easy as far as Utrecht. Nice!

Check the cannon balls stuck in the church before you go inside.
The interior is highly decorated. In the center of the church you will find mirrors that you can hold to see the wonderful art work on the ceiling. Keeps you from getting cramps in the neck. Highly recommend.

This wonderful old church is beautifully maintained and can be visited during certain hours on specific days of the week. There are 12 beautiful paintings of the wooden ceiling with lovely brass chandeliers hanging below them. It dates from the 15 century and even has the grave stones of prominent people buried inside the church. Information leaflets are available in your home language. It is staffed by volunteers.

The church is beautiful, good acoustics, but the concert was extremely boring, even 1st rank seats were not good

Glorious church started in mid 1300s. Absolutely stunning painted wooden ceiling from 1500s. Really enjoyed the experience

Mid morning we started out and heard music from the church. An organist and trumpet player were rehearsing for a concert in 2 days and we were able to hear bits of a Bach concerto that sent our hearts soaring. The women who manned the gift area were really helpful and the church was quite well kept and full of presence. We count it as one of the little 'presents' we were given on this trip to have dropped in here.

The ceiling of this church is adorned with the most amazing murals. They usually have mirrors to help you view in detail without having to strain your neck. When you've finished being amazed by the ceiling, take a look at the stones on the floor. There are numerous engravings to commemorate those buried under the church, but what is really interesting are the pictograms. I have NO idea what they represent, but I've never seen anything like it anywhere.
