The planetarium is a work of art and incredible invention of Eise Eisinga, a Dutch astronomer. The museum is a lesser known tourist site, but interesting for anybody who enjoys astronomy or the wonders of the universe with a little but of history. I highly recommend this location for a visit.

The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is a unique place to visit. It's amazing that this man already on a young age was fascinated by planets and their movements. The planetarium shows a working model of the universe. Although it's a small museum, because the Planetarium was build in the house of Eisinga, it's a must see.
We had a very good and informative explanation of one of the tour guides in the Planetarium room.

The place tells the story of a regular person that managed to make a planetarium in his living room. The planetarium still works and you can get an explanation about it in English.

This was the most memorable stop during our month long trip. We very impressed by the fact that a regular guy could do this kind of thing- mind blowing.

This was just a great experience. So unexpected to see a working planet system in a 18th century house. Absolutely recommendable if you are in the vicinity of this little town with its cozy atmosphere.

It only takes about an hour or so to go around this museum but it is packed full of interest even for those with only a mild interest in the cosmos. Mostly self-guided through the various rooms and history of Astronomy in general and Eise Eisinga in particular, there was an excellent explanation of the planetarium itself from the Dutch guide. Everything else being more than adequately labelled in Dutch and English although the short films were also available in German. The particular attraction for this Planetarium being that it is the oldest continuous working Planetarium in the world. (OK, it was knocked out by a bomb for a while during the Second World War but lets not nit-pick). Our visit was completed by a drink in the next door café. This is about to become a more connected part of the museum by providing an education area and office accommodation. This will enable a front room in the house proper to be returned to how it was in Eisinga’s time.
It was well worth the €4.25 (oldies rate) entrance fee to see.

Franeker (Frjentsjer in Frisian) is one of the most interesting towns of the beautiful Dutch province of Fryslân. It is an old town with many historic buildings of interest to tourists. One of the most intriguing buildings is Eise Eisinga's Planetarium which is nominated to be included in the world heritage list of Unesco. It is the oldest planetarium in the world which still functions. It contains a model of our solar system built in the 18th century by the self-taught scientist Eise Eisinga in his own living room.

This isn't just another planetarium. It's a one-of-a-kind project created by a brilliant amateur astronomer using clockwork mechanisms, paint, and years of patience. Eisinga worked as a wool comber and dyer for his day job, but his passion was mathematics and astronomy. This house was his home and his workshop. The main presentation of Eisinga's planetarium involves a lecture in the planetarium room. The staff were able to present in Dutch, English, and German. Even though there were only two of us, they volunteered an English language talk. The presentation was fascinating and informative. We appreciated the effort the staff made to share this remarkable and unique creation with us. Several exhibits tell the story of astronomy study during these early years and in particular of the amateur astronomers from The Netherlands who advanced this science.

If you want to learn how the planets,, the moon, the sun, the stars have a relationship with time on earth, this Planetarium is a "must experience". Step back in time and see how a brilliant family lived in this tiny house and accomodated an eccentric father who set up one of the oldest planeteriums. Located in a charming town called Franeker, this slice of science should not be missed.

I was very excited about going here and it totally was worth seeing! An amazing experience to see this. I can't believe someone has built this kind of place in the 1770's. Wow.

Ik zou graag een Engelstalige uitleg willen bijwonen met familie uit buitenland, hoe weet ik wanneer dat is,of moeten we dat aanvragen? Groepje van 5/6 man.

Wat hier al gezegd, gids vraagt voor de uitleg of er anderstaligen zijn. Als dat zo is legt ze het in meerdere talen uit.
