Quite a disapointment. The information before your visit is that you will spend around an hour to visit an underground cave network that also contains a lot of art and history. In reality it can be walked out within 10 minutes, it consists of one large space with some corridors along indeed art made of marl. Every piece of art has some information, which can be nice, but it didn't catch our attention because we didn't think the cave was spectacular at all.

It's probably a great 'to do' for families. Especially since the kids can see fake dinosaurs here and play all kinds of games. For example, they can play a quiz with many of the carved marl art, they can dig 'fossils' in the sand and carve in a piece of marl themselves . However, for us it was not so fantastic.

The only thing we did like was that we were able to walk in a piece of unprocessed and unlit cave. This looked like we initially expected it to be. Considering this was a small part and the rest was not too big either and not that interesting for us, we were ready in less than fifteen minutes. If we had known this, we would not have spent our money on this. (€29 for 2)

Very nice cave with lots of educational activities. Very cool is the possibility to carve your own mergelstone. Nice bar for afterwards.

Visited MergelRijk at Xmas time 7.50 euros adult entry. just on the outskirts of the town. a good 15 min walk from centre.
Café on site. Miniature Christmas scenes and a room with the Christmas story was very well done.
Stunning sculpture of the night watch made from marl ( like sand )
Well set out and plenty to see including a dinosaur section .

Very interesting place normally a sandstone mine but for the next couple of weeks a cave of miniature Christmas models and a long walk at this time the street is blocked off so enter the town from the top if you want to park close.
Worth a visit.

Former mergel mine. Interesting sculptures. Well presented history of the mine. And in the end, fun: they give you pieces of mergel (very soft stone, raw material for cement) and tools, you can make your own creation. Place just a little bit dusty.

In the booklet you can find reccommendations to go with children, but it is interesting experienxe for everyone. So beautiful to see sculptures or paintings, made of Valkenburg's "stone"-mergel. Excibition of dinosaurs also adds up the value for this museum. Possibility to craft something from mergel by yourself is also nice. Big recomendations!

Visited here with a combined ticket to the Christmas market caves. We were given a booklet in English as all the definitions were in Dutch. It was interesting to have a look round.

This was a fun place to visit. I enjoyed the self guided tour. It was fun to carve a small piece of stone that you can keep. We enjoyed the "cave" beer in the cafe at the enterance.

It was wonderful to discover this cave's origin and history. It was a pleasant self-guided tour and the sculptures were interesting. The explanations were very good. Nice with the Christmas decorations added to it during Christmas time. A pity that this cave is not better marked and promoted when visiting the Velvet Cave which was to our taste a bit too Christmas'commercial.

After seeing the sand sculptures 2 years ago we decided to revisit and we were not disappointed. Each year seems to have a different theme and this year it was related to epic films. They do a wonderful job and the sculptures are amazing. I did miss the Nativity scene this year though.
