very interesting visit to the past

You can visit to caves and see what Roman catacombes and burial grounds looked like. It is a very interesting visit worth taking the time out for.

As a Classicist, I couldn't resist the prospect of visiting a replica of the Roman catacombs created by a Dutch textile magnate in 1910. The use of candles makes it very atmospheric and you quickly forget that this is only a copy. The quality of the frescoes and sculptures is excellent. Before we entered it seemed a bit expensive, but... More

We spent 1,5 hours in the catacombs with a very well informed guide and a candle each to learn a lot about burial in Rome some 2000 years ago. We were surprised by the perfect copies of the graves and artwork and learned a lot about history of life and dead in Rome.

The Roman catacombs Valkenburg are an exact copy of the Catacombs of Rome, nowadays some archeologists from Italy come here so the lost Rome catacomb paintings . The guide gives every one on this walk through the catacombs a candle, you take pictures but without flash, we started here at 11 am and ended our journey at 12 : 30.... More

These are not real catacombs. In the early 20c, a rich Dutch man visited the catacombs in Rome. He was so struck by them, that he resolved to build a replica of them in the pre-existing marl caves in Valkenburg for the edification of the Dutch. So why would you want to visit fake catacombs when you can visit the... More

These catacombs copy the highlights of catacombs around Rome. Them being a copy is what makes me rate this attraction as average, since these days most people can afford to go to Rome for the real thing. Actually I did visit one of the catacombs there. One advantage of this copy is that you are allowed to take pictures here.... More

The story is remarkable: a wealthy Dutchman decided in the early 1900's to have replicas of Roman Catacombes built inside a Valkenburg mountain. The guided tour takes about an hour and is worth your while. The volunteer guide hands out candles (and has a torch). In the mountain the temperature is about 12 degrees Celcius/54 Fahrenheit. The tour is daily... More

Some 100 years ago, it was in the first decade of the 1900's, a wealthy heir of a textile family suggested they might as well make out a copy of the catacombs situated in Rome in one of the marl caves owned by the family in the country site of Holland. It would serve a number of goals: - the... More

The tour runs daily at 11, at 1 and at 3 with a minimum of 5 persons. The tour lasts for about an hour but this short time is enough to get a very good impression from the guide to see the roman catacombs. I went there with my daughter of 5 and she liked it as well. For an... More

The Romeinse Katakomben in Valkenburg is one of the place you should visit once you arive in that city.It gives you a lot of information about the history of the real Katakomben in Rome. Please do not expect that you will see the real katakomben. The one in Valkenburg is a copy of the real one in Italy. Although it... More
