Group of equal number of Dutch and English. Guide would not speak in English except to say it was only in Dutch and we should have downloaded English commentary. We learned nothing. It is caverns turned into tourist trap with some interesting backstory that can be found online.

We can really recommend a visit to this cave. We did the guided tour on foot, so you had enough time to photograph the interesting parts of the cave. Our guide took extra time for the tour and was able to give a lot of background knowledge as he had grown up very close by. However, all explanations were given only in Dutch.

Didn’t understand any of it sadly. My husband, my 10 year old and I were really looking forward to the tour. My son is studying WW2 at school so we organised this trip. I came here 10 years ago and the guide asked who was English and did everything he could. Massive shame especially considering we paid €23 to come in. The actual caves look brilliant - there’s some fantastic stuff down there and you could imagine the stories are incredible. My advice would definitely be to speak to the people on the front desk and ensure you have someone with you who is going to speak English - otherwise it will be very boring for you - as we sadly found.

An interesting man made cave which is definitely worth visiting. 70km of man made tunnels that go up to 15m underground is definitely impressive. Tours are an hour which gives a very good view of how it is living underground.
The reason behind the 3 stars is the slight disappointment of no English tours available. Neither an English audio tour, nor an English guided tour. Considering the amount of international tourists, would have been quite nice to have it. The English "information sheet" which they gave us also at the till included quite an amount of spelling mistakes and direct Dutch translations that made no sense. If the guides were "friendly" as well they would try to add-in the highlights in English, but they do not seem open to this at all.

Fun experience for a family of three ( two adults a two year old + small dog).
Interesting history and free audio guide helped.
Downgraded from a four point category due to a very rude train cart driver. Might just have been having a bad day, but it put a damper on the experience nonetheless

We took a tour in the train and were pleasantly surprised, the only thing we would change is make it longer! We had a fun guide explaining things. The caves are full of art and some war history. They should really start selling some postcards with proper photos or other souvenirs there!

Such a great job they did to decorate the cave and what a lovely ambience !!! The live music where was really nice too where that little tavern was.We ate and drank here while enjoying the music and we had a great time with all the little shops with nice Xmass gifts.Do this cave first and the other cave in Valkenburg will look like a dungeon.

While visiting Maastricht we decided to do a deviation to the near city of Valkenburg (European city of Christmas 2018). Convinced by the many good reviews we decided to visit the largest and most visited underground Christmas market in Europe.
We never did a worst choice, we completely threw away 14€ (7 each). Actually it is not a Christmas market but a sort of flea market, just a small part of the stands were about Christmas and even in this case they were not special at all. The area was really crowded and there wasn’t any special decoration (just some trees, penguins and really dusty Santa Claus). We left as soon as possible (checking every stand) in order to conclude a real nightmare.
P.s. I suggest to everyone to go to the bathroom before entering in the Cave because with the 7€ that you pay for just walking among the stands the bathroom is not included.

Unbelievable how people can recommend such a place: 7 euros for a smelly man made cave with Christmas trees here and there, an horrible illumination and people selling super low quality products.
The town itself is a turistic trap, nothing interesting apart from the castle.

The ambience in the cave was so lovely. They put a lot of effort into the decorations and even the live music was good near the small tavern they made in the cave.

I was here in the summer of 2009 and we rode bikes underground. There is no mention of that here. Can you tell me where I was. It was really neat and there were two routes. The teenage girls went on their bikes in one direction and the adults in another direction. I have a friend going to the Netherlands for 18 months and would love her to experience the bike ride underground. Thanks
