About
Stichting Kasteel van Valkenburg (Valkenburg Castle Foundation) was founded in 1924 with the objectives of preserving the Velvet Cave and the ruins of Valkenburg Castle (the Netherlands’ only hilltop castle), as they are now, for future generations and keeping both of these national monuments safe and accessible.

Nothing of rilevant considering the ruins. In Europe you can visit many historic and cultural sites for free. There were three of us but was absolutely a normal visit no emotions nothing to remember.

The ruins were cool.

The castle was in ruins because the former landlord thought it was a good idea to blow his own castle up.

The caves are not really caves, but mines. So nothing interesting to see there. The tour guide only tells some made up stories about ghosts in the caves. Oh and the guide was a volunteer (tickets cost 13 euro's each) and she does this work to pay for her study. What is not right here? She showed us how dark the caves were (you can't see anything) and she even asked us how dark it would be at night. Like.. what?

The velvet cave was just as many other things in Limburg ridiculous and pointless. Nothing makes any sense. It was just a stone mine where people made some charcoal drawings on the wall, and some fake statues. The stories behind the drawing and statues were all nonsense.

Limburg is a truly beautiful provence of the Netherlands. The nature is stunning, and the city Maastricht is wonderful! But safe yourself the trouble of going to Valkenburg, it's not worth your time if you are interested in real history. The 'caves' are barely more than 100 years old and the history consists of stories that are completely made up.

We had a great time in Limburg though. I would recommend a visit to Maastricht, a truly beautiful city!

It was quite sunny when we visited. There were plenty of information boards put up to read and know about the history behind the various areas in castle ruins which made it quite interesting.

In the guided tour for velvet caves, you must wear a jacket. It was COLD down there. The only negative was that they only do Dutch Language tours.

I came to see the Castle ruins, and walked around the area; this is such a nice place full of restaurants at the bottom of the Castle.

I couldn't go to the velvet cave but j enjoyed Castle of the Ruins. The view from the top is amazing. If you fancy historical places, then it's a nice spot to spend evening and take some pictures

Paid € 50 for the family to walk through the Municipal Cave.

If it had been free of charge I don't think I would have bothered.

We paid in advance, which didn't stop us from waiting in a VERY VERY long queue to gain entry, not actually much faster than for those who queued to pay for their ticket on the day. We couldn't bear to queue until the end of the day when the queues were a little shorter.

The stalls did sell mostly Christmas items rather than the miscellaneous tat some reviewers have complained about.

It is quite dark in the cave and the floor can be very uneven and potholed at times. Not recommended for those who are unsteady on their feet or with poor eyesight.

The town itself is fairly attractive for a family visit. Small ice rink, toboggan run, ruins, many many cafes and restaurants, a few (free!) Christmas markets outside.

But if you're keen to visit a real Christmas market in the region, go to Aachen in Germany.

Horrible, just horrible. We been to both the Velvet Cave as the Municipal Cave. You basically pay €15pp to be able to look at crappy stalls full of cheap stuff that you can find on every Saturday market; phone chargers, little statues, “hand”crafted stuff.. NO food stalls inside. It’s just this. What a waste of time and money.
