Yes it is an interesting location, yes there is a lot of history and you can spend some time here enjoying the views over Valkenburg and learning.
However some of the information boards are worn out, making it hard to read, sometimes impossible to read everything. That is a pitty, again a lot of history to grab here.

The castle ruin has a lot of history to tell you. It's a great place to visit and learn about this castle.

The ruins of this castle which towers over the historic town of Valkenburg is well worth a visit. There are explanations marked along he way to identify each room and the history of the castle is explained in detail with maquettes of what it looked like in different centuries. The outlook from the ruine over the town is impressive and there is a nice restaurant/ cafe near the top to relax in and cool down with a drink.

with all due respect, but i reserved to go there today and because of the massive lack of parking we didn't go. its hard to blame them but in all honesty there's no reserved spot. i personally would recommend the owner to reserve a parking space per reservation, this is just a disaster. valkenburg really attracts tourists appareantly

Im giving it a 2 star because i don't want to tank the rating without stepping a single foot inside

Having read the reviews before going I was dubious about visiting but we did! what a mistake! You can't visit the ruins without going on the caves tour. So we paid our 12 euros each, and get our A4 sheet of translation/explanation of the tour, after waiting 20 minutes we descended into the caves, the first thing you notice is it's cold (12 degrees). But then all you get is the guide speaking Dutch and it's so dark you can't read your translation. After about 20 minutes me and my friend started making our own conversation about the exhibits, only to be told by some Dutch cave geek to be quiet whilst the tour guide is talking?????? The castle ruins were an improvement, but they aren't Windsor. Please get wireless translation.

With my wife, we took 12 other Bierlings to Limburg so that they could learn more about my roots. We first went to 3 -Corners in Limburg. We promised the grand-kids that they would visit Belgium and Germany, and so we did. Then we took them to the castle. We, through my mother's family have a claim on the castle. My mother's ancestors livwed in it for a time and we have the signet rings. Out kids and grand-kids LOVED the visit Dag.

The ruins themselves are not particularly impressive and I wouldn't pay the entrance fee just to see them. But the views over the town of Valkeburg and the nearby hills are great, so I'd say you should still do it if you have the time. Spend 0.5-1 hours here.

Out in the open is this site with the remainder of what once was a castle towering above everything else in Valkenburg. Worth a look.

Amazing walking tour of middle-age ruins in The Netherlands. This TripAdvisor page recommends three hours but it can be done in less than half that if your pressed for time. Definitely a weather-dependent tour.
