On one hand, what a fortune to discover the extraordinary theater transformed from the old church.
But from the other hand, how unfortunate, it is, like the rest of 474 existing in The Netherlands theaters temporary closed.
Patiently-curiously waiting to discover the interior of “ De Maagd” and to be the part of the audience admiring the performances on stage!

This great looking monumental building is tucked away in the corner of the central square in Bergen op Zoom. It is an old church which is now used as a theatre. The entrance is very modern and has an area with 3 or 4 levels where you can drink something before or after the show.
The theatre itself is very old-styled on the inside. It is small but also cosy. There are normal seatings but also balcony seats (2 levels).
Different types of acts are booked the whole year through and a nice time to visit De Maagd (and other monumental buildings) is during the PopMonument, when bands and singers are playing all over Bergen op Zoom in monumental buildings.

If you want to visit this theatre is it a great choice. Music, shows etc. are beautiful in this building while it is an ex Roman Catholic church and all the windows inside are just like they were ages ago. And it's not too big, so you feel well.

The Church of the Virgin Maria is a building that has served from 1829 to 1987 as the parish church of Bergen op Zoom. The church is located at the Market 30.
Late 18th century historic St. Gertrude Church remained in the hands of the Protestants. To compensate a department church for the Catholics built in neoclassical style. This church was finished in 1829.
It is a three-aisled hall church with ionic columns. In 1846, the facade of the tower was completed. The high altar from 1861 and the organ from 1864.
When the reformers left the St. Gertrude Church in 1987, Catholics exchanged the Holy Virgin Church of St. Gertrude. The church furniture moved along.
The Holy Virgin Church was rebuilt by the Dutch architect Onno Greiner to Theatre the Virgin, in which the interior was kept as much as possible. In 1990, the renovation was completed.
