Our small tour group (13) stopped for a visit after taking a walk along the Via Francigena. It is definitely worth a stop...very serene and not very many people at all.

This abbey church is located in Abbadia a Isola approximately four kilometres from Monteriggioni. The abbey is located along the Via Francigena, a pilgramage route from Florence to Rome, and was situated on a small hillock, which during those times was surrounded by water and swamps.
The abbey is believed to have been originally commenced in 1001 and was subsequently expanded in the later half of the 12th century when the new Romanesque style church was completed and consecrated in honour of St Cirino in 1173.
The church's exterior is very nondescript. There are three naves and three apses in the interior with the naves being separated by columns and pillars and the ceiling covered with wooden trusses. Renovation works were carried out on the interior and the facade in the 1950's. There are a number of steps up to the main altar which has a lovely polyptych which was painted by the Sienese Sano di Pietro. There are also several paintings around the walls.
Worth a look if in the area.

There's a slight decadent quality in the frescos, but the surrounding area is very lovely. Not hordes of tourists take the trouble to come here, so if you are into checking our monasteries, worth the trip.
