A wonderfully preserved pentagonal fortress in what was the provincial capital of Aragon. At the very least walk around the outside, if you have the time and the inclination venture inside, you will not be disappointed.

We stayed at the Hotel Oroel (see review) just a few hundred yards away and spent a good few hours exploring the Citadel. You can spend as long as you like in the museums of 'minatures', but have to join a guided tour of the walls and buildings - all in Spanish, but with written guides in a number of... More

We went there with the family just to fill an unplanned night and we found a well preserved building and two very special characters. We assisted to a theatrical visit, it was very funny, instructing and extended. We couldn't have chosen better! If you go to Jaca visit the Ciudadela and of possible through the theatrical visit.

We really enjoyed our visit to the citadel. You have to take the guided tour which is in Spanish but with a leaflet in English however our lovely lady guide spoke perfect English and took time to explain everything to us and ensured she left time for us to ask questions. The place is quite stunning to go round and very interesting.... I wouldn't make it my primary goal when going to Jaca but when you're there you must pay a visit to the citadel. Big, beautiful and surprisingly intact with a nice exhibition on tin soldiers.

From the outside one could be forgiven for thinking how can this be a fort? but when you get nearer you see that it is in fact sunken into the ground, with moat etc dug round it so once an enemy got into the moat that had very high walls to climb. The fort is very big....about 2kms round the... More

It's probably a daft personal foible, but when I visit castles, country houses and the like - I like to do it at my own pace, without having to listen to someone telling me what I'm looking at. We were disappointed therefore that when we said we'd pay for the castle and museum visit, we were told that we could... More

Stayed outside because there were no visits on Mondays. Do try to walk around the fortress and see it from various angles. Especially the one with the snow from the Pyrenees and the one with the mountains of Jaca. Curious is the number of deers by the walls...

So in the year 1592 this huge fortress was constructed! Hugely impressive and in excellent order this fort is well worth a visit. Over the (now dry) most leads you over the drawbridge and into a historical adventure. If you are into your independence war you should go!
