Mérida is a visitable city. We were surprised by the cultural wealth that is so untapped.
The joint entrance to the monuments is laughable and you realize that they lack conservation and...Good workers.

The best recommendation is to stay in the downtown area (around Plaza de España), park your car and walk.

In 15 minutes maximum you have all the areas to visit on foot. Except the House of Mithraeum and Columbariums which is further away...

Overwhelms the theater and amphitheater. I recommend booking one of the guided tours in advance and paying the money because it is worth it. We couldn't do it due to the number of people there and no places, but we saw that if you even remotely like history, you have to book it and enjoy it.

Spend hours in theater, sit down, take photos, breathe and imagine.

I also found the temple of Diana very beautiful.

Don't forget to go out for a walk, see the lighting of the monuments and experience the city.

We have been on the December long weekend and although it was evident that they were overwhelmed with visitors, we have not felt overwhelmed except in the streets of the center where more than 30-40 PAX were following guides and taking everything with them: tables of terraces, education and respect.

There are activities for children, a fair with relatively cheap prices but we have lacked a good gastronomic offer.
It is very focused on foreign tourists perhaps, and we demand more traditional and classic food.

In general we have been surprised by the amount of unpleasant people we have met both at the monuments and in bars and restaurants. It's a shame because we are one of the people who always defend local, leaving aside large expenses in hotel chains and well-known brand restaurants.

The city should have better maintenance, better cleaning and above all, the monuments.

Since it is everyone's business, let us never forget.

Overall a 7/10. Very interesting

We visited the city of Mérida in the middle of Emerita Lúdica, a party in which almost everyone dresses up as a Roman and brings to life the great ruins of the ancient city, and shows them in an alternative and fun way. We had no idea of finding the city like this, and without any complexes we went to one of the numerous stores in the center and bought some costumes to turn our visit into a period experience. In the two days we spent there, we didn't have a great time. We discovered that by being dressed as Romans the visits to all the temples and museums were free, so it more than made up for the price of the costumes. We entered all the places dressed in period clothing for free, and not only that, we saw recreations of all kinds..., slave sales, legion parade, weapons workshops, etc...
Seeing the city like this for the first time was an experience that I will never forget.

Narrow streets, modern shops shut for siesta but open when it's cooler. Plenty of ruins some requiring a ticket others are just free to see.

Ancient Emerita Augusta - theatre and amphitheatre, Roman aqueducts, old stone bridge, alcazaba, circus, ancient houses and temples - it all sums up and allowed Merida to enter the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Merida must have one of the most original and restored Roman group of buildings in Spain I would think.

We arrived mid to late afternoon and spent the next few hours seeing as many sights as possible. While it was possible to do so, a more relaxed exploration could have been better! A word of advice if buying the combined ticket... on Sunday/Monday the museum is closed and during the July performance season the visit to the Teatro is a bit restricted.

Another tip... if visiting during July, take in a performance at the Teatro!

We spent the next morning visiting the 2 aqueducts and the circus...so we pretty much fit it all in.

We planned two nights with one full day to explore town but now wish we had had at least one more. Mostly because the heat beat us and we had to retreat indoors for a few hours in the afternoon-consequently we didn't see all we'd have liked to. Merida is a small rural city-the capital of the autonomous region of Extremadura- and is full bursting with Roman ruins> our apartment in the old city centre was located between the temple of Diana and the Portico del Foro. Other monuments were also just a walk away. The town is also full of restaurants, tapas and interesting shops. It's easy to get lost but fun finding your way. We loved it,

The historical centre of Merida is not very big, you can easily walk around, but take your time, there are many nice spots, some Roman ruins alongside modern shops and many bars and restaurants. Several streets are car-free.

merida is built on roman history.
When they dig for any reason, they discover the past and really the mix is very well done

Mérida is a wonderful city of history: Roman, Visigothis, Arab and more recent Spanish. There are some very well preserved ruins from Roman times as this was an important city. The impressive bridge, the acqueducts, the ruins of houses right beneath the modern Government of Extremadura building. Of course, the theatre, amphitheatre, Roman art museum all add to make this a history lover's dream come true.
