It's always difficult to strike the right balance between the serious stuff of the sommelier and a good night out but Miss Catas manages to do both by creating a fun and focused atmosphere where everyone feels able to offer up their own observations whilst being carefully guided through the sumptuous subtleties of tasting a wine.
Ours was a blind tasting with generous servings of four markedly different wines from Spain and beyond accompanied by some excellent carne mechada to add a little ballast to the proceedings and prevent the evening from spilling into unbridled merriment.
I am not a wine expert - more a passionate enthusiast - but, despite having visited many a bodega and winery over the years, I was still very pleasantly surprised by just how much I learned from Marie Carmen, as well as from my fellow guests and the smells, colours and tastes they discerned, in what was a really enjoyable, unfussy and very informative night out.
Cheers.
