Bird watching paradise

Isolated but beautiful if you are in this area of Spain. We stayed in a local campsite that arranged tours.

Had trouble finding good information about this park before our travels. We decided to make the small detour and visit. The road into the park is already scenic but even after entering the official park lands, one still has the feeling of driving the wrong place/way. Stop at the small village with the tourist information kiosk for a map. From... More

Go to Extremadura, stay near the Monfragüe, go there by car and park it at the Villareal de San Carlos, put on your trekking shoes and experience a fantastic national park with loads of birds, fine plants and lovely sceneries. We did walk two of the marked paths and enjoyed the variety in nature. We could easily have stayed another... More

We visited this park as part of a birding group so we were lucky to have our owns guides who took us to all the best places, it is a large and very scenic park. We spent quite a while at Penna Falcon Rock watching the many griffon and black vultures soaring up into the sky from their nest on... More

We came here with an experienced guide, we aren't twitchers but had the best day. This park is full of spectacular scenery and unbridled views of Griffin vultures, black vultures, Bonelli's Eagles, Imperial Eagles, to name a few! Absolutely fabulous, a treasure of a place !

We went to Monfrague as we were hoping to see the Spanish Imperial Eagle - we managed it on the second attempt. Although the park covers a large area, most of it is not accessible and even in March, there was limited parking in a couple of locations. There is plenty of written material - maps etc available. Visiting in... More

An amazing place, I will never forget the vultures soaring over the Tejo river and then we climbed to the castle and they were aactually at eye level. There are well marked walks and we certainly intend to go back and perhaps have a guided tour and walk more of the routes.

We've visited the park often and couldn't resist "popping in" whilst on our way back to England from Portugal and are so pleased that we did. In the first open space just prior to the park proper we saw 250 to 300 crane taking a noisy break whilst on migration. The countryside before the park also abounds with stork, easily... More

We decided to drive through the Montfrague park rather than follow the morotways around and we were absolutely amazing by the scenery on offer. There are so many birds flying about that is it a haven for bird watchers. At one stage you can drive alongside the Tajo and get specaular views down in to the gorge and valleys below.... More

I traveled with my sister for 2 months from Portugal to Spain and one of the most interesting place was Villareal de San Carlos and the vulture cliff at Monfrague National Park. We spent the night at the small village of San Carlos and got by electric bicycle to the !Amazing! cliff. Great place for picnic, there are couple of... More
