What a waste of time and waste of money. After I was given the guarantee that I would spot leopards on 100%, I was really very excited, booked an overnight accommodation, one safari based on sharing (the driver spend more then one hour at the lake), where just about nothing was to see. He enjoyed himself by chatting with his colleagues while I was shaking from cold in the 4WD waiting to leave for the next area.
After 3 safaris, all I got was a terrible flu. Not a single cat in sights. Never again.
One of my safaris, I booked on private bases but again, nihil sights.
Please guys make that 99% of the time, you'll spot a leopard.
What a waste of time and tourist trap.

Jawai Bandh. Having being stayed for more than four years in Jodhpur, I have visited most of the places. However, Jawai Dam was on the list but couldn't make it earlier. This weekend we (myself with two of my friends) decided to take the trip.  We all three started from the Jodhpur at around 11.30 am and while on the way we took a halt to visit OM BANNA Temple. The Jawai Dam is around 150 Km from Jodhpur and it takes around 2.30 hours. It is situated near a small town called Sumerpur in the Pali district. This spot is to be visited mainly in wintertime. Built across the Jawai river which is a tributary of Luni, the dam offers an exquisite view of the river. Once you climbed up the stairs and reached on top of the wall of the dam, you see a magnificent view of the river and also wildlife around it. You can easily spot crocodiles and birds from the dam and the level of water makes the whole environment perfect for an outing. It is one of the vantage points in Jawai from where you can watch the entire village. You can go further alongside the dam wall to climb the rocks and have more pictorial views. Even after having such a pleasant sight, we could barely spot tourists there. Also, the place is more famous for its sanctuaries for Leopards, Birds, and Crocodiles.  The surrounding area having lots of stay options and the safari tours are operated privately here. If you love nature, must-visit.

One of the highlights of the Leopard safari at Jawai is the opportunity to visit the reservoir viewpoint.
If you are taking a morning safari, do insist your driver to take you to this place. The view from the reservoir is stunning and you also have an opportunity to spot crocodiles here. There are hundreds of crocodiles in the reservoir, and you can easily spot them. The place is 10 kms from the safari and generally the drivers do take you here. In case you have your breakfast/ high tea included in safari, you can very well have it here. The drivers always assist you with that. Overall a not to miss place in Jawai.

Don't think much and just book Jawai Manohar Vilas if you're planning to visit Jawai. Thanks Mahipalji for nice trip. Mahipalji & his family member super friendly and the food is Rajasthani authentic homely and delicious. During our stay Mahipal ji and his team took us for jungle safari which proved to be the best of all the safaris we ever went to. They made sure we see wild animals and didn't stop until they found one leopard. Anyone who is interested and likes being close to nature, this is the place for you. Everything is taken care of for you from the stay to the safaris to visiting rh local village.

It's full of energy and rejuvenating whenever you visit the same place again and again.
Walks and steps are tiring but scene post reaching the top concludes the hardwork.
Love is constant with Jawai Dam.

Jawai Dam in Pali is a real treat for nature lovers. Surrounded by big hills, it's like a giant painting! I took a boat ride and saw big crocodiles sunbathing – so cool! Lots of different birds too. The quietness makes it a perfect escape. There are nice Rabari people around, adding a local touch. If you want a break from the usual and love nature, this place is for you. Simple and beautiful – Jawai Dam in Pali is a hidden gem!

Dear friends,

I visited Jawai Dam in the first week of April 2016 with my friends and few tips I would like to share with all of you to plan a visit to this place.

It is not a very popular site for casual tourist like few other wild life destinations such as Jim Corbet, Ranthambor etc in north India but because of its habitat mostly wild life photographers visit the place for very high possibility of leopard sighting.

It's hilly and rocky area and very little greenery so the visibility is high but leopard generally is sighted at a great distance like 300-400 meters, so planning to go there for photography carry at least 600 mm lens else getting a good picture is rare.

For leopards the best time to go this place is winters that is from Nov to Feb when leopards sits out in open for a longer time and also birds and crocodile also better visible at Jawai dam water body. Even bears are visible in this area.

The place is located right on Delhi-Ahemedabad Rail line and few trains stops here. The name of the railway station is Jawai Bandh which is hardly 5-10 Kms from most of the staying places here which are limited but quite decent and few of them are from those people who have old havelies there and converted in resorts or hotels where you can have a feel of traditional Rajasthani culture living and food also. Castle Bera is one of best there and rates are some thing like 12000/- INR for double room, all meals and Safari. I stayed in the forest guest house which is right at Jawai Dam, location is great.

The place is 380 Kms from Jaipur, 170 Kms from Udaipur and less than 150 kmsfrom Jodhpur and all these places are well connected by very good toll paid highways excepting from Sumerpur to Jawai Dam which about 10 Kms off highway.
Sumerpur is the place from where all road travelers has to take a detour from the highway for Jawai dam.

In totality its is nice place for wild life lovers.

Thanks

A good place to visit for bird watchers. Lot of flamingos can be spotted.
Tip: Best chance to spot the maximum number of bird species including migratory birds is during Winter (Oct - March)

We drove quite close to the end of the lake behind the dam, where there were hundreds of migratory birds feeding in the pools. We saw Ducks and geese, cranes and storks and beautiful flamingos as well as many other varieties of smaller birds. It was a delight.

After a morning safari to try and locate Leopards we visited the Jawai Dam. It is quite massive but because of a shortfall of rain during the 2015 Monsoon season the water
level was quite low. Off in the distance we could see fisherman in boats rowing towards shore with their catch and there were some crocodiles just barely visible on a few rocks that were jutting out of the water. I had an opportunity to see some of the fish that were caught before we took a drive down to the shore. Birds were seen at the edge of the shore but were too far away for good photos. Since this was late morning the sun was already blazing hot and it was quite hazy, it would have been a better visit if it had been early in the morning but I did enjoy seeing the dam and was amazed at how large it really was.
