Minoan Tree

Oh yes, this tree was already old when the Roman Empire flourished.

With a base-wide trunk (diameter) of 22.10 meters and a height of 6.90 meters, this tree is one of the oldest trees in the world and the oldest tree in Europe.

The tree is called "Tree of Paliama" and is about 3.400 years old. It was planted about 1.300 BC.

It still produces olives, but they are very expensive. This tree yearly has about 20.000 nature loving tourists over to visit it. Best time to visit is before noon. There is a local tavern to have a drink. The owner and his wife are very helpful and friendly but they hardly speak English, but they manage with the few words they know. Speak slowly and clear and they will offer you more than you would expect without extra charges.
Visiting the tree is all free. Admire it, but respect it in all it's glory and age!

The Ancient tree
Sep 2019
This is the oldest olive tree in the world, over 3500 years old but it is only a 5 minute photo opportunity, and the tree is roped off so all visitors have to keep their distance. It is a spectacular tree but the drive to its location is rough over an unmade single track road, just hope that you do not meet any vehicles coming in the opposite direction.
The best thing about the tree is the nearby Taverna which is run by the nicest Greek couple I have ever met, they speak good English, offer good well priced food and cold beers and freshly squeezed orange juice. We only had drinks but were still given free nibbles to go with the drinks and finished off with a shot each of the best home made Raki I have ever tasted. Do pop in if you visit the tree.

Lovely place to rest after a long walk.
Jul 2018 • Friends
This is a lovely place to visit, particularly if you like to go walking among the mountains of Crete. The tree is about half an hour to an hours walk from the main road, depending on your route or the speed at which you walk. The walk itself is very pleasant possibly a little steep in places, but the views will keep you going, take a camera! It is also possible to drive up to a car park near the Manoan site and of course after the long walk, or short drive refreshments are always welcome. There is a small cafe near the tree where you can catch your breath ready for the return journey.

Ancient tree

The road up to the olive tree is a bit adventurous to drive on. There is a part in the middle when the road becomes really bad, but it is only for a few meters and it's paved again. So just continue on. There is a hiking trail up the hill, easy to do for experienced hikers but a bit challenging for people unstable on their feet. I recommend to hike up the road instead in that case. The olive tree itself is impressive in it's size and it's age is truly spectacular! There is a small 'cafe' just next to the tree where refreshments can be bought.

Ruined by future road for Tour Buses
Aug 2018 • Family
Unfortunately this beautiful peaceful hike up to the olive tree will soon be ruined - the mayor of Kavousi is plowing old trees, archaeological sights and anything else in the way to make the road big enough for Tour Buses !

It was a very great moment to stand in front of that ancient tree and be able to touch it - felt like touching history itself
