The place that can be visited around the springs is small, but particularly beautiful in spring, when the color of the river blends with that of the vegetation. The Timavo is an underground river that originates in Croatia, runs a long stretch in Slovenia and rises again in San Giovanni di Duino to flow into the sea after just 2 km. This river inspired Virgil who described it in the Aeneid, but it also created legends linked to the cult of water and woods.
Near the springs is the small Church of San Giovanni in Tuba, built in the 15th century on the site of an early Christian basilica. The peculiarity of this place of worship is that behind the altar there is a source of water that enters from the floor and covers the ancient mosaic.

This is a tranquil spot just before you enter the industrial zone of Monfalcone. I suggest a visit in the spring, when everything is green. Nice church, well and walk along Timavo river.

If you are nearby, don’t know what to do and have some minutes to spear visit San Giovani del Timavo. There is a free parking a few meters away.

The church is lovely, modest, build on the temples of an old one. A quiet place.

There are also river floodgates, but that’s about it.

A visit to this site with its great and mysterious charm is highly recommended. If you are near Duino you cannot miss it, access is still free, which is a non-negligible point.
