The fortress area hosts museums, an old Orthodox Church, cafes, restaurants, and artisan shops.

Most of the buildings date from the time of Russian rule, the 18th and 19th centuries. The main street, Kristiinankatu, was named after the Swedish queen, Christina.

The guardhouse at the Main Gate hosts the Cavalry Museum. You can also visit the Lappeenranta Art Museum and the South Karelia Museum.

There are panoramic views from the embankments around the fortress.

Very quite and peaceful place. I was traveling alone and came there occasionally, and I was surprised with an atmosphere inside. I spent 2 hours walking around (winter time) - the place is amazing for thinking about eternal things by yourself!

I visited the Lappeenranta Fortress for the fist time and I liked it very much. So much history and interesting and beautiful building and details all over. I guess one could spend hours wandering around the fortress.
I was surprised how much life was inside the fortress; homes, cafes, museums and so on. I somehow thought it was all ruins so a nice surprise there.
Wonderful views to the Lake Saimaa and to the city center from the fortress.

Plenty of history around in this nice, quiet neighborhood. There are not really that much left of the actual fortress (only the outer walls, I think...) but nice old buiildings and a nice view to the lake.

Lovely spot on the shores of Lake Saimaa, plenty of cafes and shops at least in the summertime. Hired bicycles to get around the place and that was just perfect for exploring.

Nice place with small shops, coffees, museums and historical sights. The view to the Saimaa lake is pretty nice. Especially in the summer months worth a visit.

What a superb fortress. A real credit to the Royal Engineers of Sweden , Russia and Finland who constructed the bastions, ground defences, ravelines, casemates, ditches and magazines.

Interesting pretty area with good views over the lake. Sadly the Cavalry museum is closed in 2018 for renovation so we were unable to visit there but the Karelia and Art museums were both open. As the summer season does not start until June it was very quiet.

I have visited this place several times, but the best was in summer when everyring around was green and blooming. On the territory of the complex are several museums, orthodox church, monument to the Russian-Swedish battle in 1714 after which local autority came from sweds to russians. I liked re-enactors whom I met once in summer on the territory, they were wearing traditional finnish clothers and were busy with some old times occupations. Also there's a wonderful view from the top of the hill to a bay wit boats and yachts.
