The beautiful Graasten Palace has been a summer residence for the Royal Family since 1935. When the Royal Family is not present it is possible to visit the gardens and from time to time also the church. The gardens are very nice with flowers and a nice view of the town of Graasten.

The grounds are beautiful and well kept. The flowers were blooming and the gardeners were busy! A great place to take a stroll.

With manicured lawns, forests and lakes, The Gråsten Palace is a beautiful and tranquil place for a stroll.

Unfortunately, I visited the palace during winter when most trees had shed their leaves and flowers were no longer in bloom but it was still beautiful and I got to enjoy a lovely sunset which is rare for this period.

Gråsten Palace has beautiful, well-kept gardens, and being an active royal residence attracts a degree of cachet. A visit here is very sedate and relaxing, but with no museum or organised attraction it could be accused of being boring. However, that misses the point somewhat. This is an antidote to the modern theme park, and as with anything in life, you can always make your own fun.

My recommendation for a visit to Gråsten Palace is not to just see the palace in isolation - while it might be graceful and tranquil, it has more to offer if you look wider. The forest attached to the palace is vast and ripe for exploring, on foot or by bike. The town of Gråsten has a couple of good places to eat and enjoy a drink too. Or nip into the local bakery for a classic pastry.

The simplest day out could go something like this: Park up near the palace, or in the middle of town, and take a stroll into the palace grounds. Explore the gardens, enjoy the views across the lake, get up close and personal with the royal residence, maybe even take the detour up to the little cottage. Then continue on the path out to the forest, take the second left and the path will take you through the woods back towards town. Once in town, stop for lunch at Det Gamle Rådhus or Den Gamle Kro. The walk takes about 45 minutes and is on well-made paths.

The palace is not open year round: During the summer, when the royals are in residence, it is closed to visitors. This is normally from the end of June to early August.

Great active castle in the middle of the countryside. Open to public when family not there. Appears to have no security and yet respected by all and left quiet. Seems to be a place of extreme pride in the community. I liked the painted windows to make the exterior look asymmetric.
