We spent a lot of time at Kings Landing when my sons were young, coming up from Connecticut for visits. Both ended up participating in the Visiting Cousins and Family Kin programs (one opted to do Kin twice); it became a special site for all of us. My husband and I have since returned to visit on our own.
We live relatively near Sturbridge Village, and if asked which site I preferred I'd give a slight edge to Kings Landing. I enjoyed the depiction of different eras, ranging from Georgian to Victorian, and I liked engaging with members of the staff and the visitor participation opportunities that were offered.
Plan to spend a day (at least!), bring a camera, and have fun talking with the people at each house. (And BRING YOUR KIDS--they'll love it. You will, too.)

Had a great time visiting King's Landing-it's well worth the trip. Just don't plan on lunch at the King's Head Inn on the property there. I had the Acadian Tourtiere which is a meat pie. It was so full of spice-mainly cloves I think-that I couldn't eat all of it. The baked beans which came with the meal arrived in what I can describe most accurately as a SMALL shot glass-maybe 2 tablespoons worth?? The carrots, potato salad, beans, and bread were not bad. Fiddlehead soup fairly tasteless and the biscuit that came with it nearly....well, not great. I guess that this is supposed to be standard "Tory" fair, but for $14.95 they should do better than that!
Again, the village was great-just the restaurant was sub-par!

I have been to others such as Upper Canada Village, and this is far superior. The homes all have people in character in and around them. They are actually cooking, cleaning etc. as you visit.
There are many characters moving around the site as well. They are all very friendly and knowledgeable about the history.
My favourite part is the working saw mill run by water. Very impressive.
The bathrooms at the entrance building were actually spotless.
The only negative experience was at the inn when we decided to have lunch. There are several rooms to be seated in. We were put in a room with 4 tables of 4 people. We ordered our meal, then there was a group with about 6 very hyper children came. They were attempting to seat them in our room when we left without having our meal. I feel that families with children should be seated together and couples etc. should be seated separately.
All in all this place was great.

We used to love Kings' Landing but, unfortunately, I have to agree with others; it is going downhill fast. The staff are still as lovely and personable as ever, but the dining experience has definitely lost its charm. On weekdays, at least, patrons are no longer seated in the small, intimate rooms of the King's Head Inn, but in a larger hall that is more like a refectory. The menu has changed as well, and not for the better! Basics, such as fish and chips, used to be offered and were excellent, but for some reason now the "chips" (British for "French fries") have been replaced with potato chips! Really! What is the current chef thinking!? Last time we went, a couple of weeks ago, it was still advertised as "Fish and Chips," but we were told we could have any potato but. The meal has now been renamed, but still, really, if you want to be authentic to the time period, you should at least call it "Fish and Crisps," which I doubt has ever been offered to anyone else associated with the British Empire (and consider Kings' Landing's historical provenance) ever!!! The lovely salads, such as the "Jocelyn," have also disappeared and the menu in general is a pale imitation of what it was last year and in previous years. We bought a season pass this year so that we could walk around and drop in for lunch, but we think we have gone for the last time. This won't even make our season pass worthwhile. What a shame, as it was one of our go-to places! We are outsiders, but have lived in Fredericton for 33 years, have been regular and enthusiastic patrons, and have seen many changes - the most recent, in terms of the dining experience, are definitely not for the better. Today, for example, when we went, we and a number of others, were waiting until 2 p.m. to be seated for lunch as the restaurant was catering to a coach party. That's fine, but what an opportunity to open the rest of the King's Head Inn! In addition, the portions seem meagre and before anyone in management tries to defend this obvious economy in their mind with the thought that we are large eaters, we are not; my wife eats like a bird, never half finishing a meal out, and we are both more than slim. If the management would like to get in contact with us, we would be pleased to give our input to them privately as we would like this enterprise to thrive and certainly wish we could have given a more positive review.

King's Landing is an A-1 attraction. That being said, this review is entirely regarding the King's Head restaurant. Having had a great experience in the past, I made a reservation for my family to attend one of their evening Christmas dinners on December 9, 2011. We arrived on time, got mulled cider from the bar and settled in to enjoy ourselves. In the hallway, I happened to pass one man complaining that they didn't like their location with the manager explaining that the restaurant was full. I only realized a connection with this later.
A short while later, the service staff informed us that we would have to move. Thinking that they just had to slide some tables around and were moving us to another of the many small rooms, we were fine with that. However, then the spot where they planned to put us turned out to be too small and a tight fit for a table for 5. We were then given the option of squeezing in there or taking a table in the large hall which is used for corporate Christmas parties. We opted for the larger table. As we walked to it, I noticed the reservation cards of an Insurance/Financial Management firm on the tables they were now pulling apart.
This location was TERRIBLE! Three large Christmas parties located at other tables completely drowned out any attempt at conversation and the entire night was spent repeating what we had just said. I now realized that the Insurance/Financial Management firm had some sort of problem with their reservation (or simply hadn't liked the location) so it was decided that our reservation would be sacrificed to please them. Two other tables of small groups were also moved out to our area.
Overall, I am rating them a 3. I have given points for 3 reasons: 1. The service staff bent over backwards to try and mitigate the damage to our evening (our waitress was phenomenal!), 2. the food was excellent, and 3. when I raised my issue with the management, our meal was comped. This succeeded in reducing my mental state from 'furious' to merely 'angry'. Naturally, my preferred choices would have been, firstly, to enjoy our evening at our original table and pay our bill or, secondly, to simply stay at home and not waste our time. Sitting through all that noise for some free food comes in a distant third. If I was concerned about cheap food, I would have taken my family to a fast food joint. We were looking for a quiet, intimate meal of Christmas atmosphere and ambiance. In this respect the whole night was a wash.
I have removed two points for the obvious fact that our reservation was deemed to be less valuable and that we were somehow expected to take the hit to please the Insurance/Financial Management firm. I can understand this from a business sense, better to alienate 5 people than 20, but, speaking as a repeat customer, I find this shortsighted and insulting.
I just wanted to give people a head's up. If you go to one of these dinners and a more 'important' client complains, your reservation will be meaningless.
As for the Insurance/Financial Management firm I only wish there was a place to review them as well so I could give my opinion of a company willing to put children out of their seats to suit themselves. I definitely will never be using their services.

I last visited Kings Landing in Sept 2017 and was dismayed with the changes to the Jones House, from a vibrant living period home reflecting the family that had lived there, to an uninteresting static museum with no soul. I have visited Kings Landing most years when I have travelled to New Brunswick and always took pride in the vision of the settlement and the Jones House where my Mom and her family were born and I visited as a child at it's original location. It truly saddens me to see the movement away from costumed staff demonstrating how life once was which captured the imagination of all, to an impersonal and uninteresting series of galleries. I believe the administration is misguided taking KL in this direction.

Hi SEL2010_10,
We appreciate you taking the time to leave feedback about this change. Many of us are very fortunate to have such strong ties to the heritage buildings on our grounds. It means a lot that you took the time to let us know how you feel.
Warmly,
Rachael

Over the weekend I visited Kings Landing with my family and I must say I was quite disappointed with our experience. We were considering having our kids participating in the visiting cousins/kin program next summer but now aren’t so sure that is a good idea. We received a lot of hassle from Linda at the front desk over 50% of admissions coupons because when I printed them I used my name and not individual family names. Few people at the houses spoke to us. I was going to list the houses we weren’t spoken to but it would quicker if I listed the ones we were, Perley house, the general store, the lady boiling wool, both men at the Fisher house, the man at the print shop, and the man who drove the wagon. I must say we were very disappointed with our visit, I remember going there as a child and it being a wondrous magically place, and was really looking for to going back once I had the opportunity, instead I felt like I was an intruder bothering someone as they went about their day. I hope that my experience was unique and not a common one, I would hate to think that a tourist would be going home to their family and friends and telling them about their bad experiences, sullying what is a great province we have with great people.

We took our two kids, age 6 & 10 to King's Landing. We are a military family, but military id wasn't accepted, but our rec passes were. The rec pass enables you to get in free, of course being on vacation we didn't have them with us :) The family entrance fee with tax was around $46. We all learned a thing or two about the 1800's. The staff are always in character, they're very kind and helpful. We could see how lumber, doors, nails, horseshoes, cake, cookies, prints ( the list goes on) were made. The whole settlement is hands on. The have a restaurant ( we didn't eat there) and wagon rides. Plan to spend a few hours there! Take water!

King's Landing is a "in character" village depicting life in the 1800's by showing you how family lived in decade segments of the 1800s by letting you into their day to day living in their homes. All guides are dressed in the fashion for that decade and their position in the community.
You will visit lawyers, farmers, shop owner, clerics and doctors as they go about their daily lives. Many of the family are "Empire Loyalist " who left the United States to stay true to the British Royalty.
The King's Head Inn is an excellent eating place with fare to match the era but not the prices. Their Sunday supper is really good with Yorkshire puddings and perfect roast of beef. Desert are diet breakers!!!!

Make the effort - just make the effort........this historical settlement complete with period people who actually know and are passionate about the history make this both an enjoyable and educational esperience. Set in the 1800's, a number of the buildings have been relocated but they are period 1800 and the natural setting is just beautiful. Entry cost is more than reasonable and I envy the people who live in the area who can get an annual pass at a very reasonable cost. Each building has a dedicated 'pioneer' and I would caution you to be wary of Miss Patience Little - the school marm. Without going into too much, all I will say is that that have a 'corner' and a 'dunces hat'. A brilliant day out for all ages - particularly those who wish to learn. For those who have difficult walking, there is a free horse and dray team that regularly traverse the property thus relieving those with aches and pains from excess walking.

Can cars go between sites for those with walking challenges?
Written May 2, 2019
Hi ginny224, We don't allow vehicles on site, but we do have free horse & wagon rides that travel throughout the site. Most of the site is accessible to wheelchairs and electric scooters, and we have electric scooter rentals available on a first come, first served basis.

Frederick Perley built the house in 1866 in Queensbury on land he inherited from his father, David Perley. It was land they farmed and ran a tavern on. The land was originally bought by Davids father Oliver Perley.

is this attraction fully staffed through September?
Written August 8, 2016
I would say that Kings Landing will be fully staffed until closing in the fall. As the weather gets a little cooler, you may enjoy the walk around much better. The wagon ride back is very enjoyable!
Written August 11, 2016
No. They will not let the dog through admissions. They are quite strict on this rule. See my review.
