Sunderland Maritime Heritage (A wonderful little gem hidden in Sunderland).

A very educational and friendly visit to Maritime Heritage. The volunteers keep a lovely maritime museum. They do a lot of public displays showing the story of Jack Crawford nailing the colours to the mast of The Venerable.
Well worth a visit.

Nice place but lacks knowledge
Jul 2018 • Friends
Visited last year. The workshop is pleasant enough but there is only really model ship to see. The small visitor centre is well used for its size. When asking about the history of ships I was researching the researcher as he was called had no idea what I was talking about. There appears to be a small library but no real archive. After checking the visitor there was a stand about ‘Willdora’ but later research showed it’s not any Dunkirk ship websites. The staff were helpful and informative but it’s obvious they are not trained.

The history of Sunderland's shipyards is being kept alive by a group of enthusiastic and approachable volunteers. There's a 1/10th scale model of Jack Crawford's ship HMS Venerable and volunteers on hand (including the model maker) to show you around. There's many smaller model ships and lots of nautical artefacts. Be aware this is also a workshop with plenty of activity going on so can be nosiy. There's no charge but donations are gratefully accepted by the team.

We visited the SMH place yesterday, great place with great volunteers helping to keep Sunderland's shipbuilding and maritime history alive.

We were given a guided tour, given great information about what they charity is aiming for. The work and details on some of the models are totally amazing.

The volunteers are very passionate about their cause.
Well done to all of them.

Visited with my daughter as her school will be involved with some of the Tall Ships activities and discovered this amazing venture after seeing a newsletter at Sunderland museum.

The work this dedicated group of volunteers does is so important and they are right to celebrate such an important part of Sunderland's history and it is a real shame they are hidden away but hopefully their involvement in the Tall Ships will raise their profile and that of Sunderland's shipbuilding prowess.

We were greeted by a lovely friendly volunteer who offered to show us around. Both me and my daughter were interested in the amazing 1/10 model of the the Venerable and my daughter was not familiar with Jack Crawford and his heroic actions in the battle. The model is a real labour of love and a puzzle as they use the original drawings plus knowledge of other similar ships of that type to really do justice to this project. The project manager was kind enough to talk to us about the project and my daughter was pleased as he had visited her school to talk about shipbuilding.

The newly renovated museum rooms are full of interesting information and artefacts about shipbuilding, ships and the lives of the people who built the ships that made Sunderland 'the greatest shipbuilding townin the world'.

We enjoyed our time here immensely and give thanks to the volunteers we met and who gave us their time and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in shipbuilding or the history of Sunderland.

Very knowledgeable volunteer staff, obviously committed to the maritime museum and the exhibits were carefully displayed with full descriptions and history. Well worth a visit coupled with a visit to the main Sunderland Museum which has a floor devoted to the Maritime history of the City of Sunderland.

Facinating displays and skilled staff

Easy to park, the centre resembles a commercial workshop with the exception of a 1/3 scale model of the HMS Venerable. Wow! This and other models and boats are fascinating as is the small "museum" attached. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and skilled - great guys!
