Can't wait to see inside...
Aug 2021 • Couples
We visited as the external areas were completed the interior I'm led to believe is finished but waiting for finishing touches/finalisation.
Lived the external improvements the wild flowers are stunning. We spoke to a couple of the volunteers who were very knowledge and enthusiastic about the site. I'm hoping it opens soon and we can see the interior and the view from the parapet.

AMAZING HILTON CASTLE
Nov 2019
While not yet fully restored, this piece of history is amazing as is the story of the Hilton family and everyone in Sunderland. Picture bus loads of school children visiting the castle. They will benefit through the history of the castle and the ability of children to imagine life in 1390. Also picture weddings taking place on the grounds with amazing photos of the castle as a backdrop. Also consider the economic benefit to the entire community as tourists will visit the castle, eat in local restaurants and stay in hotels as we did. AMAZING visited June 2019

Ancient castle
Sep 2020
This castle was a ruin until this year when it has been restored. Nice grounds with ruined chapel. Children's play area next to it. Worth a visit if passing.

They have made the castle a great attraction after putting a lot of money into restoring it to its former glory.

Stunning building
Jan 2020
This is a stunning building, great architecture and stonework. The building is currently closed for restoration but you can still appreciate the outside of the castle. There is ample car parking. The grassed areas around the castle are a bit muddy due to the restoration works. Even though its closed it is still worth a view if you are passing the area.

I was born and raised in Sunderland its great to see the Castle undergoing this well overdue renovation, its been neglected way to long.
Sorry if its not big enough and grand enough for some, but I for one love the place always have, and I know an awful lot of other locals do to.
To see it with windows in at long last was great.

Not completed
Sep 2019
I looked on the website, to see if it was open, which it said YES, when I arrived the castle was surrounded by a metal fencing, I stopped a chap in a high vis jacket and hard hat and enquired if he knew when it would be open, he told me not for a long time.
I think it's very bad practice to advertise something that you cannot deliver, as you will not get those visitors back.

Undergoing restoration
Aug 2019 • Couples
Didn't realise until we arrived that the castle was being restored. A bit more information about this wouldn't have gone amiss.

Still under renovation which will be great when finished. Shame English Heritage didn’t think to put on their site that the castle was closed at the moment.

Renovation in Progress
Feb 2019 • Family
After years of abuse the Castle is finally getting renovated. Progress is well on the way, but access is still restricted due to the work. I recently attended a tour around the battlements showing the work which was great. The crests on the front show the family links including an early stars n stripes of the Washington family. There was also a recent Civil War re-enactment at the Castle which was very good. There has been some criticism of the castle on this site, which I can understand but hopefully within the next few months this will change when it re-opens to the public. Several years ago this was part of a Time Team dig showing the previous history
