Roker Park is an area of greenery and recreation space located in the Roker Part of Sunderland around two miles from the City Centre of Sunderland. We often walk from the City Centre on foot to take in some of the different random pieces of artwork that line the route alongside the main road and it usually takes around 45 minutes to get to the beach which then leads onto the park. If you make your way to Roker Beach and walk towards to the nautical research pods (big round balls on wheels) located near the old lifeboat launching area (now graffitied over), you will approach the park from the left through a small entrance.
As you enter the park, you enter through a slightly shaded area before emerging into a large area of greenery with a Victorian bandstand on it. From this navigation point, you can choose to go to view the boating lake, look at the mini steam engines (that children can ride when operational), a large play area. There are toilets located within the park that are open dawn to dusk and there is usually either an ice cream van or a coffee van selling a selection of hot or cold drinks.
We love going after a long walk to the beach and walking around the pier by the lighthouse because it allows us to spend some meaningful time together without spending more than the cost of a cup of coffee.
It is great to see families out and about enjoying the sunshine and the heat as well as other couples such as my partner and I taking in the sights and sounds of the park.
Roke Park is an excellent example of some of the hidden gems of Sunderland and it is definitely worth going along for an hour (or two) with the kids (and potentially a picnic) if the weather allows for a safe, free and fun day.

This is a great park to have a walk around. Lovely well kept areas of greenery to sit and have a picnic, a Victorian bandstand, boating lake, and mini train ride. It is great to see everyone out and about again enjoying the sunshine.

This park was a lovely surprise right next to a hotel I was staying in. They had just opened the illuminations to the public which were delightfully set out with a fairy tale theme books open on specific pages - gorgeous illuminated characters. A small fun fair for the kids and even the small fountains around the lake were illuminated. Absolutely lovely idea and well done to the local businesses who supported this and made something so lovely for families to visit. Clearly well kept and well loved park.

Been to the illuminations again tonight.
I've never seen such a farce. Only one gate open to let you into the park and 1 to let you out. Surely this contravenes some health and safety regulations???
Once inside the lights are nice but you're herded around a one way system like cattle.
The parking is abismal and the event cover stewards were miserable and had the personality of a wet mop.
Couldn't get down fairy dell because it was closed for "safety reasons" apparently there was too many people.

Must visit the model railway for a ride when the old blokes are there. Saturdays and Sundays during the high season, and when special events are on...

This is a great place. I would not go to the Christmas illuminations again because it was disappointing. The boating lake is good and everything else is amazing.

Queen's parade is on the sea front and has about 10 places where you can eat (although some of these may only open on an evening)
With children in mind, I recommend Martino's
