Extraordinary set of caves and very hard to imagine how a large group of people could have hidden out for 9 years. They had everything there, school, hospital, army barracks, theatre in an attempt to keep life as normal as it could have been during such a long war. We were on tour with our own guide who knew this... More

Vieng Xai and Sam Neua has the karst mountains of central Laos with a unique historical perspective. The guides speak English and the headset guided tour was informative and very well done. It is well worth getting out of the usual places and coming here.

A must see if you make it out to this region. The Audio tour is exceptional. You listen to accounts of the secret war in Laos - it is unbelievable that people lived in this cave system for 9 years. There was a hospital, school, stores, bomb shelters, living quarters and headquarters of the Pathet Laos movement. We learnt so... More

I didn't expect that the Caves would be so interesting and modern (audio guides are available). So many historic caves to visit!

The audio tour gives you lots of information, the English speaking guide that'comes along, makes sure you don't get lost in all the caves surrounding Vieng Xai. The Cave Visitor Center has friendly staff as well and good information.

I'm so happy we made the trek out here to take this tour. It's worth it to rent a scooter because you end up saving money between tuk tuks there and back. The tour is so informative and some parts moved me to tears. As a US citizen I'd say it's imperative to come here and learn about the strife... More

A visit to the caves provides opportunities to learn about Laos' history in the latter half of the 20th century. Tours are only offered at 9am and 1pm. You have to pay extra for different times. A guide accompanies the tour that is an audio. 18 locations are listed, but only a few are reached during the tour.

Vieng Xai is not on the "normal" tourist route through Laos. But if you have time to make a detour - do it! We visited the caves in march 2013. We took the morning bus from Sam Neua to Vieng Xai (plan extra time as the bus is not leaving punctuel if it is not full) and then took the... More

If you are travelling through Laos, make sure that you head to the Hua Phan province and the town of Sam Neua. This town on a beautiful river is worth exploring both for its proximity to Vieng Xai but also for the markets and clean hotels. It is a lovely stopover after travelling by bus through twisting, turning mountain roads.... More
