Well kept mausoleum

Short walk of about 10 minutes through two private gates. Cars are discouraged. Grass well cut and stone legible.

Aussies Abroad

The Macquarie Mausoleum is a must for Aussies who visit the Isle of Mull. Easy to find and the walk along the drive to get there is very easy. 10-15 minutes is all you need to see everything.

Harassed by OAPs!
Nov 2019 • Solo
I went to visit the Mausoleum today, I drove down as I have had both my knees operated on and in receipt of a war pension. On getting to the first gate I was curtly informed by an old man that I should have walked down, I stated that the sign said I could drive if I had difficulty walking. He harrumphed at me and let me through. As the signage was poor (as the OAP couple told me they didn’t want anymore) and as I felt intimidated I parked up in front of a subsequent gate only to be told to move on through, which I did again. Parking in front of a third gate as I wasn’t sure I could drive any further. I paid my respects but even before I could reverse out of the second gate I was informed by an old woman that there was no room for me to turn round through by her property. I informed her that it wasn’t my intention to, at that she harassed me further - it is clear she does not like visitors to the piece of Scottish history and will continue to cause distress to visitors who dare to go there. Even when I called her madam I was accused of patronising her! I will be sending this review to National Trust Scotland as this is clearly something they need to deal with. Otherwise if you do visit be prepared to be harassed and harangued by the old couple whose property provides access to this piece of Scottish heritage. You would think that Mull would treat its visitors far better.

Beautiful wee spot

Not only the surroundings are stunning, but it's also a lovely little walk from the main road (note you can't drive any closer, cars must be parked at the main road). Amazing history lesson for all. I imagine mpst people don't know who that person was, yet he's of such great importance.

Small slice of Australia's white history

We were told about the Mausoleum by the hosts of our BnB and as Australians we thought we may as well visit. The walk from the roadside car park is pleasant enough, although you do need to walk through the estate gardens. If you have spare time on Mull a visit is recommended, otherwise Mull has so many more other attractions which far out weigh this one.

Amazing building , intersting information about the Macqurie and Australia which can be read by the mausoleum, neatly kept. Can be accessed by foot only through a path which takes you through estate property.

A Macquarie Returns!
May 2018 • Friends
We arrived on the Isle of Mull knowing that is where our friend's ancestry was from, but didn't know about the Mausoleum until we checked Trip Advisor. Found the parking area and it was down-pouring! We pulled it together and started the trek. It is all flat to get to the site but it is quite a walk, going down a long road and through a few livestock gates. We saw some sheep and beautiful trees over the driveway. It is very well maintained and a nice dedication to the Macquarie family. There are more Macquarie's on the Isle of Ulva (another cemetery). Even if you don't know all the history it is a beautiful walk and well worth the trip, even in the pouring rain!

A nice walk from the main road

I was aware of this place having just joined the National Trust For Scotland, but hadn't originally planned a visit as it was off our route. However, on seeing the sign we stopped and set off walking. It's about 10 minutes walk along a very peaceful road. On arrival there's not really that much to see. The tomb is in the middle of a walled lawn, and information boards tell you a little about the character MacQuarie. If you are not Scottish or Australian it is unlikely that you will have heard of him, so the bonus was that we learned a little more than we knew before we visited.

A must see slice of Australia on Mull. Maintained by the National Trust of Australia we stumbled on this place on our way to Ben More. It is tranquil and beautifully set amongst simple gardens.
