This modern cathedral is designed to have excellent acoustics allowing it to be used as a concert hall. It is constructed of concrete and wood with external cladding of titanium sheets. The cathedral is dominated by a large gold statue of Christ. There isn't a...More

It is beautiful from the outside - and worth a drive-by or stop, but the inside isn't really worth it. It's a modern church. It was part of a city tour I took. I was expecting skylights or some way of viewing the Northern Lights...More

Lets be clear, there are not many buildings to see in Alta. If you do make the trip to Alta, you have to pass by the cathedral. Very clever and unique building. Having said the above, it is much nicer in pictures. I thought it...More

I thought that the design of this cathedral is very clever, it has a an impressive tower which house a winding Jacob's ladder and a subterranean floor that is dedicated to explaining the phenomena of the Aurora in graphic detail with some interactive activities.

The Northern Lights Cathedral is a stunning structure built to serve the community not only as a church, but for local activities. The building is truly a sight both inside and out. We attended an evening organ concert inside. The acoustics were wonderful! The structure...More

My wife and I and 3 children were in Alta for a day on a cruise ship in February and a visit to Alta is not complete without visiting the Arctic Cathedral. It is impressive from the outside and more impressive on the inside. A...More

No disrespect to the clergy, the Norwegians nor the people of Alta but the last time I saw anything that looked like this it was a boiler house! Made of grey cement it also looks, from the outside, like a great big wedding cake with...More

So another church. Not so! This was so beautiful!! It is modern and the lights emulate the northern lights and it's just a peaceful, beautiful different cathedral. We loved it. Also, the people who work there are wonderful!

It would be hard to come to Alta and miss this church. It's on the edge of the central business district with a nice mountainous backdrop. It's one of those places that looks larger outside than inside. The inside is very modern and, frankly, not...More

Hi It's very close, 5 to 10 minutes maximum. It took us about 10 minutes but we were walking on deep, slippy snow and ice in winter, so I guess 5 minutes should do it easily! From what I remember, the steeple was visible... More
