The Stone Wedding are rock formations located 5 km from the town of Kardzhali.
Interesting is the legend that tells about these rock formations – when the wedding went, everyone who saw the face of the bride got frozen. So, at a wedding, a wind blew, took off the veil hiding the face of the bride, and all the wedding guests were frozen instantly!

We stopped here as part of a circuit including Perperikon and the Stone Mushrooms and it was well worth a stop. There is very little signage in English but the sat nav got us here easy enough. The features are pretty well hidden from the roadside and it's not until you walk in for a bit that it reveals itself to be quite an impressive place and larger than expected. There are lots of strange blindingly white stone features eroded by the wind over centuries and it looked a bit like a mini version of Cappadocia in Turkey! Well worth an hour of your time.

The Petrified Wedding is most recognizable for the dual towers in most pictures. The site definitely has a number of other unique structures which could be considered the "guests" of the wedding including many structures resembling humans or animals. The location is easy to find from the road signs. Wheelchair or disabled access is nonexistent like most other sites in Bulgaria. The walk from the parking lot is about 300 meters, a few different paths but they all lead to the same place. The Bulgarian government would do well to preserve this amazing site for other tourists.

The name of the phenomenon comes from the fact that rock formations resemble people gathered in one place. The legend for this place tells that a young lad from the village of Zimzelen fell in love with a girl from a neighboring village. During the wedding, on the way to the village, a wind suddenly blew and took off the bride of the bride. In front of her indescribable beauty, all the wedding guests conceived, and the father-in-law envied her son. Natural forces petrified everyone for the unclean thoughts of the father-in-law. Only the bridegroom remained alive, and through bitter tears he asked the wind to steal him. The natural element fulfilled its request, and as a result, the Stone Wedding phenomenon still stands next to a puddle, which is considered to be the tears of the unfortunate bridegroom.

Bad road, but very worth a visit. This is very close to Kardzhali. If you have time, walk across the valley, there are more strange natural forms there.

The place is amazing. The nature is brilliant to create those rocks. If you have imagination you could find different figures. We tried to go with Google maps typing Stone wedding but the location was wrong but there are signs so it is ok. It is better to have confotartable shoes. If you go in the summer you can also eat black barries!! :)

Whatever the name, this place is enchanting - very peculiar and beautiful rock formations that, according to some, picture a wedding. I, personally, recognised the bride and groom, a couple of camels, and some other shapes. Combine with Perperikon and the Stone Mushrooms.
