The monument is located in front of Uttaradit city hall. Here, the bravery, patriotism, and loyalty of Phraya Pichai, a ruler of Pichai town in the past, will be memorized forever. He is not only a hero but also a symbol of Uttaradit. During Burmese invasion of Pichai town in 1773, Phraya Pichai grabbed his swords to fight Burmese army. He beat and repelled invaders but one of the swords (in his right hand) was broken as can be seen from the monument. We arrived at the monument at 7:30 p.m. and did some worship before entered to the city.

This is the town’s hero monument and he has been enshrined in the shape and form of an impressive statue. The local pay respect to him - on special Buddhist days and Holidays - the flock from all over the province and bring their young families - its show and tell time for them - there is a smallish museum and some souvenir stalls - a visit well worth it.

Phraya Phichai or Phraya Phichai Dap Hak was a noble man and a general under King Taksin during Ayutthaya period. He fought against Burmese invaders although his sword was broken to reunite the country. Beside the monument, there are several small museums (one dedicated to Phraya Phichai and one housed the world largest sword made from sacred iron ore that can only be found in a specific sub-district of Uttaradit province).

Yet another great place to visit. I did not notice till my 10 year old daughter pointed it out, this is the statue you see when you search for Thailand. It is very humbling to read about this great warrior then see his remembrance. It does get very hot in the heat of the day. Best to visit early morning or late afternoon. Also plan around school times because it is right next to a busy school district.

History books say that Praya Phitchai was a valuable, brave warrior who died being devoted to his King. Local people honor him with food, prayers, flowers, candles and.. thai box matches! On weekends , you can see fighters engaged by someone who wants to offer a recreational moment to the hero. If you step in front of the statue, please take off your shoes and "wai" (bend your head and cross hand - sawadee greeting).

Another very interesting story behind this shrine and museum. Basically came from being a nobody to being the right hand of the great King Taksin. Whenever Taksin was to be executed the new King offered Phi Chai his life but he made his decision to be executed with his King, a great true story and very widely known by the Thai people. The shrine itself is indeed very nice although if only for that I wouldn’t recommend anyone to go out of their way but very close to the shrine is a museum and that makes it worth your while. Probably one of the best presented museums I visited in Thailand and very modern and admission is free. This is the hometown of Praya Pi Chai dap hak and while others have his statue they have his birth place! Highly recommended.
