The Bhumibol Dam is a very impressive arched concrete dam on the Ping River. It was the first of many multi-purpose dams built in Thailand, completed in 1964. At 154 meters, the dam is the highest in Thailand. The turbines generate over 700 MW of power, which when the dam was first completed accounted for an astounding three-fourths of the country's power generating capacity (now less than 2 percent). Visitors are welcome to drive up the dam crest and walk part of the way out onto the top, where they can get impressive views of both the reservoir and the downstream power plant. For anybody interested in engineering or impressive construction, or just wanting some interesting views, the dam makes for a nice visit. There is no charge to visit the dam and security staff are very professional and friendly.

If you’re staying in the Tak or Ban Tak area it’s worth driving up here for the views .
The Bhumibol Dam is the largest dam in Thailand . We didn’t have time to go on a boat trip or eat on the raft restaurant but the boat trip looks interesting .

Superb views and supersized architecture...no reason its the biggest dam for hydro electric power generation. there are accommodations inside the dam campus for visitors to stay during night. there is also a cruise which take up upstream with provisions for lunch/dinner. all the roads leading to the dam are of the best quality possible in Thailand. a big thumbs up to the government for managing in a perfect manner.

It's particularly memorable to go there during the time for Thais to memorialize the loss of their greatest 'father' of the country. The King initiated building this first big dam of Thailand when he was only in his late 20 years old! He wished to improved Thai people's lives from floods, droughts and with more electricity for a growing country. The Thai Government received some assistance by the American engineering firm building Hoover Dam. If you there in the next year or so, there's a special exhibition of the history of this dam upstair with a memorial book to sign occasion of the passing of King Bhumibol. I took photos from the exhibit when the young King and Queen visited to open the Dam around 50 years ago!

I have now lived in Thailand just over 3 years and I am happy to say that this country never ceases to amaze me with all of its natural beauty. The Bhumibol Dam area is easily accessed from Highway 1 just a few kilometers away and is well worth the visit. The area is pristine and neatly maintained with beautiful scenery and garden areas. although the dam itself is not so dynamic in size, it offers wonderful scenery and is really a nice break from the long drives on Highway 1.

Bhumibol Dam is located 30 km above Tak, in Sam Ngao Tak province. It is worth a visit. It is free of charge. There are several viewpoints and a few places to eat something. A boat can be rented to visit the surroundings.

A day out in tak,Thailand biggest dam,you can get a boat to the temple island,600 baht is the minimum price for the boat ,how many people it dosnt matter, stop at restaurant is included. Mostly thai's on holiday,Chinese tour bus's. During the wet season (when dam water level is high)you can get a boat to Chiang Mia from here ,or visversa. Also in the dam complex is a range of accommodation, if you plan to stay overnight?,or there is a resort (5km away called chat Chai, chalet style 700 baht)there is a range of restaurants at complex, and has 1 of the finest golf course 's in Thailand (par 72).and round of golf, hire of clubs, buggy and caddie will cost you 1400 baht .
