    Fascinating landscape
What you are looking at is actually the river bed of Mae Khong river, which fills in the month September. When the river withdraws the rock structures (Sam Phan bok = 3000 holes) become visible that have been formed already 110.000.000 years ago. It is a fascinating landscape and of course people see all sorts of significance in the shapes, meaning a Mickey Mouse hole, a heart, the number 800, the Grand Canyon etc. See what you want to see and enjoy he unusual shapes. There is no entrance fee. Although it is walkable I would recommend taking a pick-up (200 baht for the whole car) and we were joined by a sweet 7-year old (!) guide who gave a very good explanation, albeit only in Thai. You can tip whatever you like, we gave 100 baht which was probably over-generous, but it is lovely to see this young enterprise.

Holy cow... that's a lot of holes!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Sam Phan Bok. We hired a boat that took us to several spots along the river. Boat rentals run from a few hundred baht to 2,700 baht, depending on the destinations and duration. As noted by others, there are lots of fun shapes of the holes and pools in the rocks. The entire area goes under water when the water level in the river rises in rainy season, but we were there in May and it was still very good. The young boy working with the boat operator knew where all the interesting rock formations were and was an expert at positioning us for fantastic photos, including unique reflections and framing by the rocks. The current in the Mekong River is very strong and the water is deep; be sure to wear a life vest when boating.

    Rock climding
There is a choice of walking to the boulders or taking a ride in a pick up which will cost 200 THB for a round trip. There is some climbing involved so be careful. Once at the rocks there are guilds for hire. The famous formation are Mickey mouse which was easy to find, Heart and number 800.

Best time to visit is after 15:30. Not hot and beautiful sky. Super ig photo spots.

We arrived from boats, suggested by local people that it is more suitable for my 70+ parents. Still a bit of climbing, though. Our boat guide was terrific caretaker and photographer, not afraid of getting up/down/wet for each photo spots.. ;)) Never know my parents would love to be models. They got their new profile pictures.

I plan to come back again. Love this.

For an attraction during the dry season when the water level in Mekong River is low, Sam Phan Bok is definitely a must-see for visitor to Northeastern Thailand. The name Sam Phan Bok meaning 3,000 holes. The visitor will witness the rock formation after years of water's force that polishing them. The area can easily explore by oneself with Baht 200 per pickup to take the group there. However it is best to have a local guide to lead and show the way. In order to help the local tourist industry, the trip is promoted with additional boat ride to other interesting stops.

Thanks a lot to Brent from The Outside Inn in Ubon!

Without him I maybe wouldn´t go there..... the only thing he didn´t tell me - you don´t need to take an expensive boat, 1000,- THB for maybe 30 minutes / the rest is walking either to see the best part - you can easily walk in from the resort above or the restaurant beside

Best time to be there is sunrise or better sunset - I saw many places around the world - but this place get a highscore

Take enough water with you - it´s really hot out there !

It was the most beautiful nature building in Ubon ratchthani, the best sunset point and it's worth early waking up. Or in the evening it's also nice to visit and the twilight is just like a dream.

One of the most interesting sites of our trip. One can visit Sam Phan Bok only in the dry season (roughly from December to May) as there is not enough water so the stones will show itself. It is hard to explain what you will see but it is worth visiting. We recommend you go on a boat ride while visiting the place.

If you are in the area and have 2 - 3 hours to spare then it's worth a boat ride through the channels of this rather barren rock formation. Best time to go is late afternoon to avoid the intense heat of the day. As a cautionary note, be warned that the local tour boat operators and even the guides in the area have a poor proficiency in the English language. Because of this the prices for services being provided are a bit confusing. The price for a boat tour is 500 THB per person for a foreigner. However, the boats depart from an area which some 700 meters distant from the restaurant and parking area and you will need to pay 200 THB additionally for the round trip transportation in a pick up truck, down to where the boats are moored. If you need good standard accommodation nearby then the Plaifah Resort, just a few kilometers further north is highly recommended. The resort offers an outing to Sam Phan Bok to see the dawn colours over the site which apparently is the best time for photos.
