This was such an amazing experience! I went with 3 other girlfriends and it was a private camp with just us and the elephants for 6 hours. It included a delicious lunch and over 480 amazing photos all included in the price. I highly recommend this!

My gf and I had a wonderful day out at this elephant camp. This is ideal for those who want to get away from the more crowded/ commercial camps. This came specialises in small groups. We had the camp to ourselves on the day. This enabled us to make a close connection with the elephants which will always be treasured.
The camp staff are also really nice people. Art as guide doesn't just do this as a job, it is his passion along with the entire team. They have a really good connection with the elephants and they tell you the essentials of raising the elephants in order to keep them safe and sound. These creatures possess a very sensitive stomach that requires so much attention! Thanks to this team of Thai people, they are in good hands !!!
Ps.. Art Rocks

We had a great experience at Gachorgwa.
Art, the 2 elephant keepers, as well as the photographer all do a wonderful job.
We enjoyed the learning experience, feeding the elephants, the lunch and especially the ride and river bath!
Completely recommend!

Went to stay here as part of a trekking experience and was horrified to see two elephants chained to trees on the families land.
The elephants had approximately 1-2 metres of chain and could hardly walk. The elephants were very clearly unhappy, making distress calls and swaying from side to side. What broke my heart the most is the fact that one of the elephants was tugging at the chain on its foot with its trunk trying to get it off. When they were asked if the elephants were let off when there were no tourists there, the answer was no. The climate in this part of Thailand is quite cold at this time of year and the elephants couldn't move to warm themselves up and were making distress calls through the night.
The accommodation was sub standard too. The floor was broken, the building shook and there wasn't even a floor covering to sleep on.
Would not recommend staying here at all. It ruined my whole trekking experience.
We booked it through Doi Inthanon trek. And we had no idea we'd be staying in a place like that.

Dear Tripadvisor User: GL2016
First of all to make it clear, Gachorgwa Elephant Camp "don't have" over night program at all. We do provide only Day trip. The reason that you can stay there was because your tour guide would like to decrease his budget of accommodation by ask our staff (ex-staff now) that is his relation and let you stay there. So, your horrified experience with our building that ruined your trekking experienced. We don't accept that was our problem. Better that you should ask your tour guide why he have to bring you here without noticing us at all.
For your concern about our elephant, let we do explain for our upcoming guest too.
1. We do chain our elephant every night. But not possible that will be 1-2 meters chain. Because 2 meters cannot let the elephant can sleep. And we don't do that for sure because if we use 2 meters chain like you said. Our elephant cannot be able to lay down and sleep. In the morning, we cannot use sleepy elephant and if we do use 2 meters chain, our elephants might sick and die before you can see. We can guarantee that the chain that we use is longer than 5 meters. So they can walk to drink at the river and sleep on proper land. The reason why we have to chain our elephant is their safety. If we not chain them, who will take response if some of bad guy would like to steal them?, who will take response if they walk and cross the road and hit by the car? To do chain is the best way to keep them safe and along of the day time, the keeper will unchain them and do taking care of them for whole day. no matter that we do the guest or not.
2.How did you know that the elephant were unhappy. Making some noise and moving was the simple thing that healthy elephant have to do. It mean they still active and healthy. Only dead elephant that don't move.
3. To try to release them self was the normal thing that they can do but if we release them and let them roam free and have a problem in answer 1. Who will response for that incident?
Gachorgwa Elephant Camp were established because we would like to pass the correct information about how that Karenees do taking care of the elephant. We told every single guest that we do use the chain and why we have to do. To say that we not use the chain is very easy and don't have to explain anything, just hide the chain before our guest will arrive the camp. But would like to people do understand why we have to do and we are not lie to anybody. For further information that you would like, you can get more information by our site at www.gachorgwa.com or contact us directly by : gachorgwateam@gmail.com
With best regards and respect

Had a fantastic day! We were picked up from our hotel and driven directly to the camp. Spent all day with two very friendly elephants. A delicious lunch was included and plenty of water. Very clean restroom facilities too. All in all highly recommended!

It was a beautiful experience we had at Gachorgwa Elephant Camp. The camp located in the middle of a jungle with perfect natural stream which could be quite far from Chiangmai town but it was truly worth to visit. The elephants are well look after and while we were there we can felt how much Art the owner cares about his elephant and staff, also his hospitality could not be beaten!

Absolutely fabulous day with the crew. They had a personal shuttle ride to the hotel and from the hotel. Our host spoke strong English and is very good at making you feel comfortable. The drive to the elephants is about 90mins but could not be more worth it.
When you arrive they give a full overview of the day's activities. This is a very small business and intimate atmosphere. My girl friend and I worked directly with the elephant care givers. They taught us how to not only care for the elephants but a lot of history behind the use of elephants.
Riding was certainly a little scary at first but they teach you the commands and walk you through safely riding. Then you go on an extended tour around the area on the elephant as they graze on the hillside of the beautiful facility.
For the finale you walk the elephants into a great stream and help to clean them as they playfully splash in the clear water!
Gachorgwa was a very special experience and gave us a profound respect for elephant handling. Everything was photographed by one of the handlers with a great camera they provided us with a flash drive of about 400 pictures from the day.
Side note: they provided us with an amazing lunch, water, riding clothes, and pick up/drop off from our hotel.
We would highly recommend them to anyone as they truly understand what the average traveler wants to experience while respecting the elephants and keeping everyone safe.

We, as a family, 2 adults, 4 children from 6 to 14 and the grandparents had a great day with Art and his staff. It was a day of learning, sharing and fun. As my 9 year old said "I have learnt so much today", my 6 year old keep saying that every time he closes his eyes he sees elephants...

The entire family spent full day at Gachorgwa elephant camp with my 4 kids (from 6 to 13) and my parents (70+) and EVERYBODY enjoyed it a lot.
People really care about the elephants and about the people so it has nothing to do with those big farms with 30 elephants where it is more about business.
During the day you learn about how to look after the elephants, their health, their characteristics and etc...
You go for a nice ride, swim with the elephants to wash them in the river and have a wonderful lunch on site.
Art, your guide for the day is really nice and looked after the entire family. It didn't feel like a business but more like a day in the countryside with friends. We totally recommend it. The small number of advice is due to the fact it opened only 6 months ago but we are sure it will grow and reach to number one elephant camp in future.
Totally worth it !

Ten stars! Love the philosophy of this business. Take great and careful care of the elephants, employees, land and community, and the rest will follow. We had a magical beautiful day learning about, feeding, riding, swimming and just hanging out with the most beautiful elephants in lush and peaceful surroundings. I will forever remember it.
