Old Orwell Kirk
Jul 2020 • Friends
Found on the path around Loch Leven. The graves and building are very old looking and with interesting writing and markings . Unfortunately I can’t find out too much information about the building or those who are buried here but very interesting none the less!

Hidden, fascinating
Sep 2018 • Family
My family and I were walking along the trail by the shore of Loch Leven when a local biker stopped and told us about the site which is hidden from view and not marked with any sign. We found it fascinating and spent some time wandering the site and trying to puzzle out the inscriptions on the grave stones. Worth a visit!

An odd place, no signs or markings but a well trodden path.

Great explore for kids whilst installing an air of mystery and awe.

Forgotten and overgrown, stick it on your urban explorers list

Atmospheric and interesting

Spotted this once on a walk and thought we'd go back for a look, it's very overgrown but a great space to have a mooch about, the grave stones are nice to look at and try and read.

Mausoleum
Mar 2017 • Couples
Visited here yesterday with my wife during our walk around the entire 13.2 mile Loch Leven Heritage Trail.
You will find the mausoleum situated between the Balgedie and Milnathort stone markers along the Heritage Trail, and accessed by deviating slightly from the trail by going through a gate, and it is just a few yards walk (to your right if walking in an anti-clockwise direction or to your left if walking in a clockwise direction). Easily spotted from the Heritage Trail itself.
Unfortunately during the walk there is no reference whatsoever anywhere to this Mausoleum, and even when you are in the grounds themselves there is absolutely no information about it.
The following is what I have been able to find out after doing some research -
In 1729 the Church was relocated from Orwell to Milnathort.
The site of the medieval church is occupied by a mausoleum of 1865 (to the Thorn family of Thomanean, to the west of Milnathort). This is the building that is here today in the graveyard. The mausoleum is rectangular, has no windows, and has a porch which is now blocked. Above the blocked off porch door is a shield dated 1865.
The site is also known as the 'Old Orwell Churchyard', 'Orwell Parish Church' or 'Old Orwell Kirk'.
Gravestones here are known to date back as far as 1633. There are a number of 'table stones' here too.
If you do decide to visit take care as the area is quite overgrown and there are possible trip hazards.
For those further interested, the Standing Stones of Orwell are located about half a mile upwards of this location, in a field off the A911 road between Milnathort and Balgedie.
