Fantastic fortress, pretty preserved. Built during the kingdom of Bosnia. Within it is a museum. From the top of the fortress, I was beautiful to the Travnik.

As a part of guided tour called "TravniÄŤka hronika" we climbed up to the Old town castle. It worth seeing parts of our cultural in-heritage.

If you are the medieval fan and want to walk in King's steps than, if you find yourself in Travnik, I recommend you to visit the fortress.

Clocktower has been restored and now is ticking like new.

14/7/24 Sunday morning

We three middle aged guys from London were spending two nights in Travnik in a private apparrment right by the castle bridge. It was easy for us to visit in the cool of the morning, we hoped.

We had our breakfast on the balcony looking up to the castle walls, watching for it to open at 8am (as advertised even on a Sunday) but despite some tourists waiting then it ended up opening at 8:25.

We got there at 10:45 and bought our tickets (4 each) from the guy at the kiosk. The activities were being set up - archery, shop and dressing up with photos taken.

The castle is large and spacious with the usual openness and lack of railings (some would say Health & Safety) meaning I was not happy walking along summer of the ramparts. The views from the top were good obviously. The odd butterfly fluttered in the bushes. A few trees were present.

The was a basic water selling dispenser inside. The shop had a local woman weaving souvenirs from drink mats to carpets. There was no cafe on site.

Around the castle were interesting interpretation panels of the topography, geology and wildlife of the area. They were all in Bosnian though.

I had a chat with the friendly ticket man about the small amounts of litter in the cattle and the dried up river under the bridge.

I nearly paid 5 for 5 arrows at the target but chickened out as the woman running the stall and a few other women I saw were obviously better than I worked have been. She ran quite a popular attraction for next to zero cost.

I spent 5 instead to get a small photo of my friend dressed up with a sword and shield. The young man was studying photography next year at Sarajevo University, good luck to him. I think the archery was making a lot more money than he was. We seemed to be his only customers at the time.

The main tower housed a very interesting museum of local artefacts, tools, costumes and a photography display of old world farming practices, and living styles, no doubt on their way out as progress reduces the ring populations in the countryside. There were some striking portraits. On the upper level was an exhibition of the history of Bosnia which was interesting but not in English unfortunately. Mind your heads as the door lintels are very low!

We left the castle at around 12:15 so we were there a good 90 minutes. If the interpretation has been in English and there were a cafe we might have stayed longer. The castle is well worth the trek uphill and the entrance fee. It's obviously cheap for us tourists so if you don't mind heights at some locations it is a great place to learn about the local area, wildlife, culture and history. If you have data and Ggltranslate maybe even learn quite a lot!
