About
Poilvache is the largest still existing medieval fortification in the Meuse Valley. Located at less than 5 km from Dinant, the site of Poilvache lies on a calcareous spur overlooking the river and the picturesque village of Houx. The 13-15 century walls and several towers protected the "Town" and the "Castle" of Poilvache (2,5Ha "intra muros")

It was a hugely interesting place to look at. The information was also easy to read (via QR codes). Despite some words being taken directly from French, this was easy to read and very informative. The view was breathtaking and the lady standing at the reception was extremely friendly and went out of her way to speak in Dutch. Chapeau!

There's really allot to see when visiting the ruins of Poilvache. You pay only €2 per person and you get a reading guide explaining everything about the ruins. I enjoyed visiting this attraction. Dogs allowed. Only toilet, no sink!

This is also the place where Hitler's forces crossed the Meuse first to inflict large-scale defeat to France! The medieveal castle offers locally brewd beer (quite strong) and explanations on what must have been a hard life in those days...

Beautiful area. Mixture of culture and nature. Very beautiful views. I recommend the visit. It is clearly possible to make a kind of giant cluedo.

Bien cordialement
