A very pleasant afternoon had understanding the path and processes involved in Wine production. I started the afternoon as a Wine peasant, and ended not much further forward other than at least a realisation of what went on, and what to expect from a fine Wine.

Jonathan whose Vineyard it is, covered all the aspects of the change from a humble grape into Wine, and explained the varieties he grew. The fact being English and giving the tour in English was a really welcomed break from having to deal with translation. The trip ended with a very pleasant tasting session complete with nibbles.

Without doubt I thought that their ‘Le Secret’ was excellent, and brought a few bottles home with me.

If I’m ever back in the area again I would happily spend a few hours there hopefully understanding the techniques a little more.

Thanks for the review. I hope the tour will form part of your journey from wine peasant to wine royalty!

If you have a couple of hours to spend in this area or happen to be passing close by (just past Perpignan & close to the main A9 Autoroute from France to the Spanish border) & also a lover of good wines then I would thoroughly recommend stopping off at this small Domaine. We went for an early evening wine tasting, tour & were also given some delightful local 'tapas' to accompany our wine tasting.

The owners Jonathan & Rachel are English/NZ, passionate about their wines & will not only proudly show you their vines but also take you through the whole process & techniques they use to both grow high quality grapes but also make exceptional wines. They are undoubtedly now making some of the finest wines in the Roussillon region which can stand up against any of the more famous Rhone wines at a much more affordable price.

Try their lovely crisp white Collioure style 'La Terre Promise' made entirely naturally from small parcels of Grenache Gris, Macabeau & Carignan Blanc, delicious with most local Mediterranean food but also local hard cheeses or their signature red wine 'Tahi' made from a blend of Syrah, Grenache & Mourvedre. If you like 'sticky' wines, their Muscat de Rivesaltes is one of the best we have tried.

It's really good to see an 'English' winemaker taking so much care to produce excellent wines from a region not famed for its 'quality'! Keep up the good word Jonathan & Rachel, we look forward to following the development of your vineyard & wines!

Hosted by Jonathan and Rachel who own and operate the business, we had a tour of the vineyard followed by an explanation of the winemakers art. Jonathan is a real enthusiast for his craft. Rachel served us a lovely lunch, of mostly very local produce, and accompanied by a tasting of half a dozen wines made on the premises. A real education for those of us with little experience of quality wine.
What a great introduction to "real" wine.
Blossom Hill no more!

Having never visited a vineyard before I was slightly apprehensive about what I was going to expect, not knowing what to smell or taste however Jonathon was extremely welcoming and friendly making the experience thoroughly enjoyable! Talking at good lengths about wine making and the local area along with a fantastic one on one tasting with a great depth of knowledge and insight I not only tasted some delicious wine I also received a detailed insight into the art of wine making. Leaving very satisfied and a few bottles of wine heavier I can definitely recommend this vineyard for a visit, 5/5!

I was interested to read Marcel’s review as my experience has been quite different. Yesterday I attended what must be my tenth vineyard tour and lunch at Domaine Treloar. At each visit Jonathan speaks off the cuff most interestingly and responds to visitors’ questions with equally interesting follow-up. Yesterday he took us round one of his more distant vineyards as, I think, a change for me. Every time I make the tour I gain an additional, intriguing slant on viticulture. Rachel’s lunches are excellent and imaginative home cooking. Jonathan’s tutored winetasting a delight.

The history and methods employed by Jonathan in the vineyard and winery are well described on the Domaine website so are not appropriate to this review. Nevertheless, the application of the principles of ‘sustainable viticulture’ are interesting to see and the contrast with neighbouring vineyards very revealing.

I have been laying down wine for thirty years or more and, although I would not class myself as a great connoisseur, I have more than a nodding acquaintance with wine. I came across Domaine Treloar shortly after I arrived to live in Pyrénées-Orientales in 2006. It happened to coincide with the Domaine’s first bottling and I was impressed by the quality of the wines. First impressions have been confirmed by the award of two stars from Guide Hachette and very favourable reviews from Jancis Robinson and others of that ilk. Not, I think, ordinary or uninteresting wines! Quite the opposite in fact.

I make a point of taking all my many summer visitors for a tour of Domaine Treloar and can recommend a visit and the wines to all, even those with only a passing interest in wine.

In summary, highly recommended.

We discovered the wines of this vineyard when eating at Bistrot Le Cortal in Vernet les Bains and decided to see for ourselves where and how the wine was produced. Jonathan and Rachel were very helpful and we left with ample supplies for the UK - especially the One Block!

I have visited many wineries in southern France and tasted their wines, but this must be the best experience yet. I spent two weeks in the gite attached to Domaine Treloar and can thoroughly recommend the gite, the area and the wine tour. Jonathan has a passion for producing quality wines and is skilful at communicating his passion and explaining his methods. The wines are a fine example of what can be achieved in this region and must not be missed

We stayed in the Domaine's gite for two nights and also went on the wine tour. Both were excellent. The gite has all you need for a family stay. Three bedrooms, bathroom and two separate WC's, as well as a stock if books and the essential Wifi. Great base for exploring the area. Jon and Rachel recommended destinations for us. The seaside town of Collioure was lovely but the bathing lake at Villeneuve de la Raho is a highlight for a lazy afternoon with kids. And of course then there's the wine tour and tasting. Moderately priced to cover the tasting costs and Jon takes you out to see the vines, explain the work of a vigneron and answer any questions. We could have quite happily spent a week there.

A perfect birthday treat arranged by our son and partner to be taken during our two month stay in Rousillon - made all the more so because Tom and Chloe were with us at the time.

Jonathan's career change, enthusiasm for his subject, relaxed approach, tips for avoiding pretention and enhancing enjoyment and understanding of wine all made for fascinating engagement - out in the fields and in the tasting over Rachel's excellent tapas lunch from very good local ingredients. We'll be looking forward to our acquisitions - held back for special occasions if we can avoid earlier temptation,

Thanks too for the recommendation to eat at La Bartavelle. Superb.

Trouillas is a charming sleepy hamlet of 1500 souls located just outside Perpignan. Based here since 2006 Jonathan Hesford and Rachel Treloar are producing a variety of wines of outstanding quality from vines some of which are sixty years old! Their Domaine Treloar has already come to the attention of the prestigious French wine bible, the Guide Hachette and to top wine writers like Robert Parker and the legendaryJancis Robinson. Born in England and trained in New Zealand Jon is a passionate hands on winemaker whose conducted tours are both highly educational, entertaining and interesting. Lunch served by Rachel
is a real treat and the wines served are specially selected by Jon to match the food, with reasons why. This is a real culinary-wine experience of the highest order and not to be missed if touring the region, otherwise nip out and grab a bottle of this classy Rousillon/Catalan wine before stocks run out.
