Being huge Roman history buffs & especially of Spartacus. We saw a special about being able to see where he trained and where he started the revolution against the Romans...we knew we had to come visit while in our way to Tuscany. The Amphitheatre is in the middle of town - is huge. The Museum is small, but worth touring. We were amazed and so glad we stopped.

Originally the Capitoline Hill of the Roman town and has served a few roles since including military barracks and horse stud.
Small but well laid out collection of artifacts. Shame that a fair amount of antiquities got destroyed by Allied bombing during WW2.
To visit the excellent Mithraeum you need to come here first and a guy with the key will escort you there.
But you need to get your ticket first from the amphitheatre...all very Italian! At least it is less than a 10 minute walk.

This museum houses several interesting roman and samnite remains from the area, such as vases, statues, tombs and other objects. Also part of the museum ticket was a visit to a nearby roman mithraeum, an underground temple dedicated to the god Mithra, one of the best preserved in the world, with many frescoes still intact, particularly that of the god killing a bull.

Housed in a building with an interesting past this museum showcases material from around Santa Maria Capua Vetere. While the displays are presented in an old-fashioned way the artifacts themselves are great. There is parking in the courtyard of the museum - just drive up the driveway.

There's a nice little bar where they make a great coffee on the corner a few doors down from the museum.

A weird catch: you need to purchase your tickets for this museum at the Gladiators Museum in the Amphitheatre archeological site - 37 Piazza Adriano. You might even look at the Gladiator Museum while you're there. I didn't.

The beautiful collection is in need of more care and attention. Needs more light to view the exceptional collection.

All included as part of your amphitheatre ticket,so excellent value. It showed the various find of the area including some funeral tombs.Very well laid out and well kept in a beautiful courtyard off a busy street.
Unfortunately we were too late to also see the Nitrate on our ticket as that closes at 4.This museum states open till 6.30pm.

We had problems finding this museum. We walked up and down the street twice and missed it every time, we didn't have a number, just street name. I asked a woman for directions and she showed us where it was. It is set well off the street with gates at the entrance, (which were open), however, it is not well advertised, which is a shame, as it is a very interesting museum with lovely helpful staff. Santa Maria Capua Vetere is so rich in history and this museum has many fine things on exhibit. The museum is a short walk, from the wonderful and amazing amphitheatre. As other people have said, ask one of the attendants to take you to the mithraeum.

Museum lies in the centre of Capua, easy to find if you have GPS. Parking nearby is possible. The same ticket valid for visiting Mithreum 5 minutes walk from museum - ask ticket office for guide.
