A building is from renaissance times and stands on the top of the hill. Interior is interesting museum. It has collection of geology, Idrija mercury mine, history of the small town and a side room with books of France Bevk. Best part is collection laces from all sides of Europe but mostly from Idrija. Entrance fee is not the lowest in the area. Look for refreshment in the downtown.

Amazing museum and the English text are all there! Lots of interesting pictures from the historical Idrija. You really get to know what Idrija was and is like. A very good museum.
Also from here you can visit the miners house and Kamst. (both really worthwhile, because you go with a local guide). It really gives you an idea how Idrija got developed.
In summer there are on saturdays open air movies in the castle courtyard! So cool. I saw an English documentary about John Lennon.
So just to much for one day to see in Idrija!

Huge building on a hill is a crown of the city. It is renaissance castle with huge inner yard. Main part of the castle is local museum. Visitors will learn about history of the region, from geology and mercury mine to the history of 20. century. All women admire collection of laces and product from laces. Entrance fee is low. They have small souvenir shop near the main entrance. Pedestrians can climb from the central part of the city – more than 70 stairs lead up. Others can use their car and park near the entrance. They organize concerts in summer season.

The lace festival and exposition are very nice. The interior patio is very beautiful with the painting decoration from Napoleon times.

Idrija - beautiful city in a very beautiful part of Slovenia.
The history totally concentrated around the mercury mining and the lace (which the women done while their men succumbed in the mines...).

Very fine and renovated castle with pedagogical exhibitions of the town's long history.
If you're in the area a visit is recommended.

During our short stay , we visited this castle and the museum inside. The castle is very beautiful and well preserved , it can easily be reached on foot. It was built in the half of 16th century and is perched on the hill, dominating the town and the valley. The courtyard facades are decorated with baroque frescoes. The museum is on two floors ; first floor dedicated to mercury mine with photos , aspects of miners life , extraction process description and the belonging tools , etc with a great minerals exposure . Second floor with town history description thoughout the two world wars and the life in Idrija . The bobbin lace tradition and its own local production are shown where Idrija is famous , together with other European towns.

Returning home we stoped here. The entrence fee is 5€,which is a bargain if you take all there is to see into acount.
The staff was very friendly, gave us a short intro into hoe people actualy found mercury in the region(by accident..😱) and sent us on our way to explore. The rooms are great, the castle is beautyfull, and you find out a lot about mercury, mining and lacemaking. Idrija is renovned for its lace.
All in all one of the best 5€ i have spent in a museum, and with all the remaining (unseen) treasures of Idrija, im sure ill be going back.
