Top spot for tourists in Zhovkva, surrounded by everything one would want to see in town, only the wooden orthodox church is slightly further down the road. Castle, town hall, main churches of all faiths within a reach. Some houses with arcades in the northern part, with small shops and restaurants - we didn't try them. Cafes with umbrellas serving fast food, icecreams and beer - cigarets smoke everywhere. Some foundations of nonexisting buildings - unsecured, without any information on waht it was. Most visitors just pass along criss crossing Vicheva collecting sights from all corners of the square.

Basically you don't have to go anywhere outside this central square. All sightseeing is there. You just only need to look around :-) Giving it 4/5 because it should be cleaned more often.

We made a half-day visit to Zhovkva from L'viv. It was only about 35-40 minutes from the center of L'viv, but quite a different world with a much more small-town feel. The square is grand and most of the sites are within a few steps of the square itself. The town hall and its museum (10 hrn. entrance) is well worth it, a wonderfully curated assortment of objects from Zhovkva history from early modern times to the present, plus a nice view from the city hall tower. The two churches -- Catholic and Orthodox -- just to the right of the town hall are both well worth seeing. They contain some amazing pieces of art. The Orthodox church art, painted by a Ukrainian painter in the early 20th century, is especially striking. The ruined synagogue is also a beautiful and sad reminder of another time and culture. The castle itself is a bit disappointing. There is little there, but there is enough that you can imagine the grand place it must have once been. There are a few interesting shops in the town that sell local products, plus quite a few restaurants and pubs. There are a fair amount of tourists present and the infrastructure for them seems to be developing. We were guided by Victor, who works in the excursion bureau at the city hall. An excellent and knowledgeable and passionate guide. Highly recommend!

The square is lovely during the summer to sit outside and have a drink in one of the tents. Enjoy people watching and soaking in the sunshine.
