Situated on a hill above the village of Viscri; this is one of most well preserved and fascinating of the fortified churches. There are a succession of buildings within the curtain walls that have informative displays about the life of the community that lived here. The slightly distressed and unrestored nature of the church complex provides an authentic sense of history. The chapel itself is extremely small and cramped with a rather creaky bell tower to explore.

Incredibly beautiful. A wonderful complex that fortunately does not have to fall into disrepair like many other buildings. In the church we were able to listen to some songs being played on the organ. The climb up the tower is an adventure, but the view is definitely worth it. Many thanks to everyone who makes it possible to preserve these treasures in Romania.

Viscri Fortified Church (a.k.a. Biserica fortificată) was built in the 12th century by the ethnic German Saxon community when the area belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary. In the 14th century, the eastern section of the Romanesque church was modified; the first fortification walls and towers were built around 1525. Initially Roman Catholic, the church became Lutheran following the Reformation. A second defensive wall was added in the 18th century. The church interior features backless pews, wood gallery, a small alter with a 19th century altar painting "Blessing of the Children" by Rupean painter J. Paukratz, and organ pipes above. The church was renovated in 1970-1971. Outbuildings contain period furnishings, artifacts, and farming implements. The church bell tower offers views of the surrounding countryside. Together with the surrounding village, the fortified church is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Viscri Fortified Church is open from 10am to 1pm and 3pm to 6pm, Mon to Sun (winter hours are shorter), with an entry fee of 5 lei.

A nominal fee to visit the fortified church at the top of the village, it has a few exhibitions, of farming implements etc. I didn't spend long exploring the church, of far more interest was the main village street, with it's quaint lost in time houses, and the people, many traditionally dressed & using horse pulled carts. Life lived the old fashioned way. Viscri is where Prince Charles has a house & it is he who has put the village on the map (& caused the spike in house prices by all accounts!).

The three points are to increase awareness on the overrating. For a UNESCO site the expectations are higher. Tourists are encouraged to park at the entrance of the village amid take either the local path to the village through orchards (recommended) or the longer one through the village. But here expect local drivers in a hurry giving you some dusty welcome… the village itself is not at all manicured and touristy. It’s just as it is. I can understand the idea of leaving things unchanged but adding some charm would not harm. The fortified church itself is nicer outside rather than inside. Some funds are to be redirected there too. Also I felt the lack of information extremely present and this is somehow disappointing. And please be aware the place is not st all disability available. So, yea, a charming place but keep the expectations correct.

Viscri Fortified Church was on my bucket list for a long time and I was very happy to be able to visit.
But it was unfortunately closed due to Covid reasons and we were only able to take pictures from the outside and play with the cats. I couldn't understand why the Viscri fortified church was closed and the other churches from the area were open. We visited other places in that same day

Not to be missed. Truly a hidden gem. And here there is also a house of King Charles of England. That something nice understands us. It is a UNESCO site. And it is a very special fortification. Beautiful church, tiring climb to the highest tower, but the view pays off ample.

Very nice fortified church in a fascinating village. It would require some consolidation work. Inside the fortification you will find a museum with expenses from those times. If you get here it is mandatory to go to the tower and see the beautiful panorama. Friendly staff, admissions is a few euros.

Great! I have been there several times within several years: It is great what they are doing. Also a lot of work! A lot of visitors, this is great. They have a real ticket-booth/hut now, the church is wonderful. Keep it going this way!

Indeed one of the best and most beautiful fortified churches in the region. We spent the night in Viscri 125, awesome place; but there are a few other that seem to be great too, and it is the best option to feel the laidback way of life in one of these time capsules.
Do not hesitate to walk around the village around the church, the houses and everything (the "streets"!!!) make you travel in time.
