Incredible castle in one of the most beautiful cities
Dec 2019

Štanjel Castle is one of the largest castle buildings in the Karst and a dominant part of the old settlement.
Originally a much smaller medieval building owned by the Counts of Gorizia, it was inherited by the Habsburgs in the early 16th century and given to the feudal Counts of Cobenzl. With the exception of the brief Venetian occupation and possession of the Coronini family of Kromberk, the Cobenzli ruled Stanjel until 1810, when the family became extinct. The commemorative plaques testify that the Cobenzli castle began to be remodeled in 1583, and today it was given a Baroque-Renaissance appearance around 1661.
During the First World War, a hospital for officers was set up in the castle. In the period between World War I and WWII, the castle was transformed into the central space of social events by the idea and merit of Max Fabiani.

Interesting, Atmospheric, Quiet Old Town
Jun 2019
The walled old town and citadel of Stanjel is interesting, scenic, and very quiet. It seems to be slowly being renovated with many buildings currently undergoing renovation, others still dilapidated, and others already renovated. We saw a small guesthouse and there is a place to eat but it was closed and empty when we were there in June 2019. There are nice views from it and one can spend some time exploring the narrow streets and buildings in peace and quiet. We saw almost no people in it at all and only one other couple who were tourists. We were all by ourselves almost the whole time we were there. In some ways, it reminded us of a smaller, quieter version of Pocitelj, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, which he had visited a couple years before, but even far less developed for tourism. Right now, it is very much off the beaten path but in some years it could well become a fairly busy tourist stop.

Lovely evening stroll
Aug 2019
We are about 10mn drive from Stanjel so we decided to go in the evening. Nice and quiet, lovely views. We wondered in the little streets. Car park, few on the side roads but payable via ap. We found out that the ticket machine is on the main road just opposite the castle. First hr free, then 1 euro per hour. Get your ticket and then walk back to your car. Not sure how chaotic it is during the day. But do stop if you are passing by

Jul 2019 • Business
You must stop here.
Beautiful panoramic point.
Good food in Štanjel castle,
They offer amazing food and good drinks.
Amazing walk in Ferraris garden.
In TIC Turist Information centre you have nice products to have a look or to buy.
Parking is a bit tricky.
But just before the entrance you can recharge your e car.

A wonderful walk to ancient times
Jun 2019 • Friends
If you come to the Karst region, it would be a pity, not to visit medieval Štanjel with castle and beautiful Ferrari’s garden. If you don't have information about the history of the Castle and the city or you dont't know, who, how and why created this beautiful garden with advanced water supply system underground (Amazing!!!) I highly recommend you to take one of the guided tours. You'll be amazed! Ask for Mrs Barbara! She's perfect and knows a lot! On the guided tour you'll visit also the curch (wich is locked otherwise) and typical Karst house as it was in the past... Take your time and do hot rush.

Nostalgic old city
Oct 2018 • Friends
I was surprised when we got first sight on this nostalgic old cuty on top of the hill. Approaching it was wondering how it is in the city (or more village) itself. And was presently surprised as it all looks pretty original still after all this modern years.
There is a good place to rest and enjoy the peace in Castel Resraurant. And later enjoy walking trough the city and Ferraro gardens.
Not really for kids - if they are not history or nature lovers they will probably be bored. Or maybe not - you should try. 😏

Nice for lazy Sunday
May 2018 • Couples
Castle Štanjel is great for couples, groups or family. It offers nice views, nature and a bar (but with no view). Go check the gardens!
I recommend 1h in Castle Štanjel and then visit at Restaurant Kobjeglava (2-3h slow food- everything local).

City on the hill
Dec 2017 • Friends
we were pleasantly surprised when we were there. Nice old city on a hill. The lady in the reception was not ready to advise, but then quickly was corrected by the guide.Thank you. They could take better care of the gallery. Ferrari's garden is really worth a visit and also the whole city on the hill. I recommend to see the spring
