River Enguri comes down from beautiful Upper Svanetia. At first it is a wild creek but after many kilometres Enguri Dam kind of tames its power. Behind the dam the Enguri Valley is not attractive any more. That is really sad.

I crossed over the Enguri river on the way into Abkhazia via the Enguri bridge at the only official border crossing. The river itself didn't really have too much water in it at the time (early Nov) and wasn't really that exciting, but the border zone was very interesting, as was the whole process of entering Abkhazia.

The river Enguri forms the border between Georgia and the disputed territory/ country of Abkhazia. You need to cross this river by a long bridge to get into Abkhazia from Georgia.
It is a fast flowing river but its fame is mostly due to the border crossing. The river forms the no-man's land at the crossing.

Simple as that - we applied for a visa and the application was rejected by an automated reply. Computer says no (Good day! We inform You that the crossing of the state border through the cheсkpoint "Ingur" is temporarily impossible. Sincerely,CD MFA RA). Some sources say it is due to tensions with Russia.

We stopped by it while driving down from Mestia, it was raining which added to the charm of the scenery. The green landscape, the water in perfect symmetry, the snowy mountain tops, ans the clouds in-between. Recommended!
(Also recommended is the power station 45 minutes further from this spot, the 270 meters dam, a must-see as well)

River coming from the southern Caucasus chain. Interesting to visit the power station and dam about 45 min drive from Zugdidi. Else the river is mainly the natural border between the break-away region of Abkhazia and Samegrelo region of Georgia.
